It seems that Fox News is trying to shake things up in the race for the White House with a proposed September 17th debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. With the campaign season feeling more like a rollercoaster than a presidential race, it’s no surprise that TV networks are seizing new opportunities and both sides are eager to bypass the long-standing traditions set by the Commission on Presidential Debates.
In letters to the Harris and Trump campaigns, Jay Wallace, the president and executive editor of Fox News Media, proposed a debate moderated by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, two veterans who typically lead the cable-network’s coverage of elections and top political moments. The event would take place in Pennsylvania.
“Wallace expressed flexibility regarding the specifics of the date, style, and venue for the talks, whether they were to be private or public,” he shared. Meanwhile, the correspondence to the election team presented data demonstrating Fox News’ significant influence over independent voters in crucial states.
I’ve learned that ABC News successfully negotiated a deal with both the Trump campaign and President Joe Biden’s team for a debate scheduled on September 10. However, in recent days, Trump has proposed another debate to occur on Fox News Channel instead.
From 1988 to 2020, the Commission on Presidential Debates, a non-partisan group, oversaw and selected debate moderators for the presidential debates. However, due to the tumultuous nature of modern politics, both Republicans and Democrats have been keen to bypass this organization, which was established in 1987 following elections where the League of Women Voters had organized the debates.
As a political analyst with years of experience under my belt, I can tell you that the events leading up to and during the June debate between President Biden and his opponents were far from insignificant. I remember vividly watching the CNN telecast, which ultimately proved to be a turning point in Biden’s campaign.
