As a seasoned cinephile who has spent countless hours glued to the screen, I must say that Lawrence Jones‘ story is one that truly stands out. At just 31 years old, this young man is breaking barriers and shaking things up at Fox News Channel – an accomplishment that is no small feat, especially considering the industry’s notorious conservative leanings.
Few employees at Fox News Channel have the opportunity to challenge Sean Hannity. Lawrence Jones is among those few who do.
Initially, when Jones began working at the Fox Corporation-supported conservative news platform, Hannity mentored him, providing guidance and opportunities, including slots on his popular prime-time show. At first, Jones declined, stating his libertarian leanings and their contrasting conservatism. However, Hannity suggested they could leverage their differences to generate engaging segments. “We’ll make it a unique feature on television,” Jones recalls being told.
Lawrence Jones consistently sets himself apart at Fox News Channel by adopting an unconventional approach. In contrast to several well-established figures on the network, he is relatively young at 31 years old. Among the roster of Fox News personalities, he represents a small group of individuals of color who occupy regular positions in the schedule. Despite being a co-anchor on the popular “Fox & Friends” morning program, Jones frequently conducts his duties from distant locations, engaging with voters in local diners and barbershops or speaking to people directly affected by natural disasters or tragic events such as shootings.
Jones remarks during a recent interview at Fox News headquarters in New York that it’s common to feel cut off from the public when you’re sitting behind a desk, your role being to serve them,” Jones explains. “In fact, I prefer interacting with people over working in the studio,” he continues. Nala, his dog, patiently waits for him after a morning broadcast.
In the near future, Jones aims to visit an entirely new location. His current focus is on finding ways to adapt “Fox & Friends” for popular social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. He’s trying to determine how to make the show more appealing and digestible for younger audiences. As he recently wrapped up a program discussing potential voting trends in Georgia, his upcoming task will be to create content suitable for 25-year-old voters and those between the ages of 20 and 30 – all within a minute’s timeframe.
Similar to its competitors, Fox News faces the challenge of attracting younger viewers who typically don’t rely on traditional cable or satellite services. Instead, they prefer watching videos in short segments or longer binge-worthy sessions on their own schedule. To engage this demographic, Fox News needs to devise strategies that appeal to them.
Despite the anticipated wider interest in the 2024 presidential election, a significant decline in the traditional business model of cable news networks such as Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN is expected. As per Kagan, a market research firm under S&P Global Intelligence, Fox News could potentially lose around 10.4% of its subscribers from the end of 2023 to the end of 2025, much like the projected losses for MSNBC and CNN.
As a movie enthusiast, I can confidently say there’s a hidden pool of potential viewers on TikTok that we, as a network, need to tap into more effectively. Megan Albano, Fox News’ executive vice president of morning programming and program development, echoes this sentiment, stating that we must uncover the secrets of this platform. Other members of our team are also testing the waters on TikTok, with personalities like Trey Yingst, Dana Perino, and Fox Business anchor Liz Claman diving in. Our goal is to use these individual efforts to draw TikTok users back to our cable network, but for now, much of our work is self-guided rather than centrally coordinated by the producers at Fox News.
His arrival at “Fox & Friends’ in 2023 — he had previously hosted a weekend primetime program and put his hand in the ring to host Fox News’ 7 p.m. hour on weeknights — has dovetailed with increases in important slices of viewership. In the third quarter, viewers between 25 and 54, the demographic most favored by advertisers in news programming, were up 11%, according to data from Nielsen.New advertisers from the technology, financial-services and entertainment categories have joined. Viewers between 18 and 49 have increased 25% during the same period. Jones’ age and Texas background add new elements the show’s on-air team, says Ainsley Earhardt, a co-anchor of the program since 2016. He adds so much to our curvy couch,” she says, referring to the program signature set piece.
Fox News boasts about attracting independent voters and Democrats, surprisingly so given its predominantly conservative programming with a red-state slant. Having Jones on board could potentially aid this effort. Jones, inspired by pre-White House Barack Obama to enter political activism, has since shifted his views on various issues. He empathizes deeply with the financial struggles faced by American working-class people, as he himself occasionally assists family members in managing their bills.
He comments, “I can manage an increase in egg prices by $5 since I’m earning quite a good salary at Fox. However, that’s not the reality for my family.
At just 31 years old, Jones has been a frequent face on Fox News for quite some time. He explains that he felt betrayed by the Democrats whom he helped gain office and, after graduating from college, decided to take action in local politics to create change. However, he vows never to return to politics again. “I dove headfirst into politics at a young age and quickly became disillusioned,” he states. Instead, he shifted his focus towards conservative media outlets such as Glenn Beck’s TheBlaze, eventually catching the eye of Fox News.
At Fox News, not many individuals have achieved such high positions at such a young age as Jones, yet the executives believe he has much more growth ahead of him. According to Albano, “He’s climbed very quickly, but there is still so much potential for him in the future.
Jones is among a small group of people of color who present cable news programs, and he believes his advancement at Fox News hasn’t received as much recognition as it could. He remarks, “The industry is certainly expanding with more individuals like me in it.” He adds, “If I were a liberal black man hosting my own show in my 20s and now part of a franchise, I believe there would be greater attention paid to our work. However, since Fox News is involved, and I’m more of a conservative advocating for freedom, this isn’t typically seen as progress.
In regards to Donald Trump, it’s important to differentiate the essence of his arguments from the individual himself. As Jones puts it, “Trump is just being Trump,” and there are instances where even he disagrees with him, especially on certain points he makes. “Growing up in Texas,” says Jones, “my mom would likely scold me” if Trump were to express some of his more controversial views.
Over the years, Fox News has been proactive in nurturing a pool of fresh talent, which has proven beneficial when faced with challenging periods of change, like unexpected departures or dismissals of prime-time anchors such as Tucker Carlson, instigated by higher-ups at Fox Corporation. Among this emerging group of personalities, including Jesse Waters and Greg Gutfeld, Brian Williams is one who is steadily rising in importance.
Jones is the one who stands out by venturing beyond studio walls, a move that producers believe strikes a chord with viewers. According to Albano, they appreciate seeing ordinary folks discussing relevant issues or navigating obstacles. So far, Jones has yet to visit Alaska and Hawaii on behalf of Fox News, but he plans to do so: “Traveling, visiting diners, conversing with people – that’s my forte.
