Twenty years ago at E3 2005, Sony showcased a video of Killzone 2 as an illustration of the PlayStation 3’s superiority over Microsoft’s Xbox 360. However, it was later revealed that the Killzone 2 video wasn’t real gameplay but rather a goal for the team to reach. Recently, former Xbox head Peter Moore disclosed that he knew all along that the Killzone 2 demo was misleading.
Reflecting on my conversation with The Game Business, I shared how Sony had once employed a clever tactic while I was at Sega, aiming to outshine the Dreamcast. Essentially, they mimicked this approach again during the launch of their competitor, the Xbox 360, in an attempt to outshine it.
According to Moore, the approach taken was identical to producing an extremely pricey film. However, when the game launched, it turned out to be a total sham. He realized this on the very first night he played it. He felt there was no chance they would deliver that experience as promised. They were repeating the same tactic used with Sega, which was: “Sure, here’s the small Xbox 360, but the real action is coming with the PlayStation 3, so you should be patient and wait for it. Look at what we can do.
Based on Moore’s statement, game journalists swiftly realized that the PS3’s power was insufficient to generate such intricate details in real-time, as acknowledged by them.
I’ll share my take on how Microsoft unveiled their Xbox 360 strategy, emphasizing that securing exclusive rights for Call of Duty 2 was a significant factor in our triumph.
Currently, Call of Duty stands as the most prosperous first-person shooter (FPS) series, now under Microsoft’s ownership following the Activision Blizzard acquisition. On the other hand, the last installment in the Killzone franchise came out in 2013 with Killzone Shadow Fall. Interestingly, a Killzone 2 DLC was launched for Helldivers 2 towards the end of 2024.
