Former Twitch exec calls CEO Dan Clancy’s self-promotion “gross”

Previously employed Twitch executive, djWHEAT, has voiced his thoughts following CEO Dan Clancy’s actions of advertising his personal Twitch channel within the chat sections of other streamers during a charitable marathon event.

Clancy, who was running in the GCX Marathon to collect funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, reached out to several Twitch streams prior to his scheduled run on July 18, requesting raids. However, some moderators of these streams kicked him off due to this conduct, which many deemed as inappropriate.

His message, shared across various chats, stated: “I’m boldly entering chats of fellow streamers that I know, asking for raids once they’ve finished streaming. This is my inaugural charity stream for St. Jude, being part of the GCX Marathon.

Previously serving as Twitch’s Director of Creator Development, djWHEAT voiced his criticism towards the strategy on X.

I’m shocked! This contradicts everything I taught at Twitch, and it’s downright offensive. Frankly, it makes me angry,” he expressed.

At one point, things were quite different. It appears we’ve taken a couple of missteps. Such actions are generally considered inappropriate, making it disheartening to witness them under any circumstances.

Clancy’s fundraiser event ended up gathering more than $4,000, whereas the GCX Marathon surpassed $350,000 in collected donations altogether. However, this achievement was overshadowed by criticism from several creators, including GCX co-founder Gothalion, who publicly criticized the CEO’s actions via a series of tweets.

He expressed his genuine frustration in a post, stating, ‘I’m truly disappointed about this.’ Regardless, he plans to gather as much support as possible for the children’s cause on their 10-year anniversary tomorrow with his friends and fellow founders. He will catch up with everyone then.
