A former cast member on Law & Order: SVU reveals whether she’ll ever return to the franchise.
As a big fan of Judith Light, I was really surprised to learn something interesting from a recent interview she did with ScreenRant about her role on Law & Order: SVU. Apparently, she almost reprised her part as Liz Donnelly just a couple of years ago! It was cool to hear her talk about it while promoting The Terror: The Devil in Silver.
The show’s producers contacted her with a potential story arc, but unfortunately, her busy schedule didn’t allow her to participate. She isn’t currently scheduled to return, but she’s not ruling it out, saying, “Who knows?” Reflecting on her time on Law & Order: SVU, she shared that the show gave her one of her “favorite lines that I’ve ever gotten to say.”
In one scene, her character, Donnelly, confronts someone who’s committed a crime, saying, “Everybody’s going crazy. What’s going on? People, take your meds.” Light has always admired the way the show’s creators developed her character, describing it as “really beautiful.”
Someone contacted me a while ago—probably over two years ago—about a potential role, but it didn’t align with my availability at the time. I’m not entirely sure what happened with it. I do remember one line I loved from the character: ‘People, take your meds.’ It was a funny moment where she was addressing someone who’d done something wrong, commenting on how everyone is losing it. I’ve always admired how well-written that character was—it was brilliant. There aren’t any current plans for me to be involved, but the show continues. They’ve been running for 23 or 25 years now, and I have a lot of affection for Mariska and Chris. You never know what the future holds.
Before starring in Law & Order: SVU, actress Robin Light was already well-known. She had previously won two Daytime Emmy Awards for her work on One Life to Live and also appeared on the popular show Who’s the Boss?
From 2002 to 2010, she played the character Donnelly on SVU, appearing in over twenty episodes throughout twelve seasons. A particularly well-remembered plotline involved her character being poisoned by an intern seeking revenge.
In addition to her role on Law & Order: SVU, she also starred in Ugly Betty, which ran for four seasons between 2006 and 2010.
Following the conclusion of the series starring America Ferrera, Light appeared in a variety of other projects, including the reboot of Dallas, Transparent, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, The Politician, Manhunt: Deadly Games, Impeachment: American Crime Story, Shining Vale, Julia, and Tick, Tick…Boom!
She was nominated for Emmys for shows like Ugly Betty, Transparent, and Gianna Versace. More recently, her guest appearance on Poker Face finally earned her an Emmy win, her first since her work on One Life to Live.
I was really excited to hear that Light is now part of the cast for season 3 of The Terror, which is now titled The Devil in Silver! It’s an anthology series on AMC, and honestly, the cast list is incredible – alongside Light, you’ve got Dan Stevens, CCH Pounder, Hampton Fluker, Chinaza Uche, John Benjamin Hickey, Aasif Mandvi, Hayward Leach, Stephen Root, Marin Ireland, Michael Aronov, and Philip Ettinger. It’s shaping up to be a seriously good show.
The new season of The Terror: The Devil in Silver tells the story of a man wrongly committed to a mental hospital. It recently launched on AMC+ and Shudder, with the final episode airing on June 11th.
Law & Order: SVU airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. EDT on NBC.
