After spending 38 years at Sony, Shuhei Yoshida, the former head of PlayStation, parted ways with the company earlier this year. In a recent interview about his career, he discussed how, in 2019, he was compelled to resign from his role as president of SIE Worldwide Studios, as the then CEO of PlayStation, Jim Ryan, presented him with two options: leading a new independent developers (indies) initiative for Sony or departing from the company.
Yoshida shared with VentureBeat that his move from working at a first-party studio to an independent one wasn’t a decision made lightly. When Jim offered him the opportunity to work on an indie project, it was essentially take that offer or leave the company. His passion for supporting PlayStation and independent developers played a significant role in his choice. He felt strongly that he could make a unique contribution in this new role, and this shift from first-party to indies seemed like a more personal growth opportunity for him than simply leaving the company this year.
In a shift at Sony, Hermen Hulst will take over the role previously held by Yoshida. Hulst had been joint CEO of SIE alongside Hideaki Nishino for some time. Although Yoshida is no longer with Sony, he hasn’t retired from the gaming industry; instead, he works in an advisory capacity with indie publishers and developers. In his closing years at Sony, Yoshida aimed to establish strong connections with indie developers so effectively that his role would become unnecessary.
Yoshida stated that his ambition when he began the indie job was to make his role unnecessary. He aimed for the company to thrive so much that it wouldn’t require someone like him to emphasize the importance of their work. He feels they have accomplished this well, although there is still room for improvement. The team is working on it. Moreover, with Jim leaving and Nishino and Hermen taking on more responsibility, he felt content about our support for indies. Consequently, he decided to move on.
After leaving Sony, Yoshida has shared many insights about his tenure at the company, including how he might have resisted the shift towards live-service games if he were still in a leadership position. He also discussed various reasons behind the absence of a Bloodborne remaster and the demise of PlayStation Vita, among other subjects.
