Former NPR CEO Jarl Mohn Makes Major Gift of Contemporary Los Angeles Art to Hammer Museum, LACMA and MOCA

As a seasoned cinema enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of art and culture that Los Angeles has to offer, I find Jarl Mohn’s generous gift to three of the city’s most esteemed museums absolutely captivating. His commitment to nurturing local talent and fostering a vibrant artistic community is nothing short of inspiring.

As a passionate cinephile and art enthusiast, I’m thrilled to announce that I, Jarl Mohn, have generously bestowed a significant collection of contemporary art from Los Angeles onto three esteemed institutions: the Hammer Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. This gift promises to enrich the artistic landscape of our beloved city for years to come.

Three institutions will share ownership and management of a 260-piece art collection as a generous gift from Mohn and his wife, Pamela Mohn, who are significant art collectors.

From 2014 to 2019, Jarl Mohn held the position as CEO at NPR. During his tenure, he also led the E! Channel through a period of significant expansion in the cable industry, from 1990 to 1998.

Over the past 19 years, the Mohn Collection has grown considerably, featuring pieces like paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media creations by artists based in Los Angeles. Along with their donation, the Mohns will create an endowment for annual acquisitions and expenses related to the upkeep of the collection. This collaboration between three museums – Hammer, LACMA, and MOCA, collectively known as MAC3 – aims to bolster the collection even further. Apart from the Mohns’ gift, the Hammer Museum intends to add 80 works from its Made in L.A. biennials since 2012 to the MAC3 collection. Curators from all three museums came together to make their first joint acquisitions, ultimately selecting 16 pieces from “Made in L.A. 2023: Acts of Living.” To date, the MAC3 collection contains approximately 356 artworks.
