It’s been verified that Charles Martinet, the renowned voice actor for Nintendo’s Super Mario character, continues to have permission to deliver his famous vocal performance.
On June 8th, well-known internet personality and comedian Ricky Berwick asserted that Charles Martinet was not permitted to perform the Mario character’s voice. After meeting with the renowned voice actor, Berwick expressed his disappointment by saying: “Charles Martinet wasn’t allowed to voice Mario or any of his famous characters during the convention I attended this weekend. It’s truly unfortunate.

Ex Mario VA is still allowed to do iconic voice
Hey Ricky, you’d be surprised how often I lend my voice to fans, but I stick to the script when it comes to Mario-related dialogue. It’s a choice I’ve made to preserve the character’s integrity. However, drop by at any Comic Con or Fan expo and you’ll certainly hear your favorite Super Mario sounds! 🎉 #woohoo
It was unfortunate that Charles Martinet, who voices Mario and other iconic characters, wasn’t permitted to use those voices at the convention I recently visited.

Martinet began voicing the character Mario for Nintendo in 1991 and worked with them for more than three decades, lending his voice to not only Mario but also other well-known characters like Wario, Luigi, Waluigi, and others. But, after over 30 years, this esteemed voice actor chose to retire from the role in 2022, passing the responsibility of voicing Nintendo’s famous plumber character on to Kevin Afghani, who has taken up the mantle since then.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to express that although Martinet no longer voices Mario in the recent installments, Nintendo has appointed him as the Mario Ambassador. In this new role, he’ll continue his global journeys, spreading the joy of Mario and engaging with us fans everywhere.
In case you run into Charles Martinet, you’ll still get to recognize his famous line, “It’s-a me, Mario!” as he is well known for saying it.
