Following a brief glance at the initial Mario Kart World trailer and some leaked merchandise, we were able to see Donkey Kong‘s new appearance in its entirety ahead of the Donkey Kong Bananza release. His brow has been significantly reduced, leading to a more benevolent and rounded look that resembles his design in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This isn’t the first time Donkey Kong has undergone a transformation; originally, he was reminiscent of King Kong. However, with Rare’s Donkey Kong Country franchise, he underwent a complete makeover and was designed by artist Kevin Bayliss.
With every redesign, whether subtle or drastic, some enthusiasts have shown appreciation for the fresh appearance, while others haven’t gone wild over it. Bayliss, expressing his own preference, voiced his approval of the design on social media and encouraged fans to accept the new direction.

Bayliss posted: “I can’t fathom why there’s discussion on this matter. It’s still DK, but improved. Let’s be more open to change! As someone who’s been in the game for nearly 40 years, I believe all great things evolve with time. So here’s a hearty welcome to the fresh new version of DK!
Bayliss, responsible for revamping the renowned video game character, added a necktie, a slight wave to his hair, narrower nostrils, and a furrowed brow that often gave him a worried expression. He argues that change should be positive, and this is unlikely to be the only alteration we’ll see.
He went on to say, “It’s important to keep in mind that about 20 years from now, he might undergo some minor cosmetic enhancements to stay looking vibrant and contemporary.” Referring to Mickey Mouse, he said, “Just like how we see the difference between early and modern Mickey, change is a form of artistic expression – but it needs to be done subtly over time. In my view, this most recent version hits the mark perfectly, though everyone has their own unique perspective on King Kong.
The sequel to Donkey Kong Bananza, titled Donkey Kong Bananza 2, will release on Nintendo Switch on July 17th. Previewing the demo version of Bananza 2, it’s clear that Donkey Kong has never appeared so stunning in a video game, and this 3D platformer might just be his chance for a comeback.
