Former Cinematographers Guild Head John Lindley Elected to Return as Local 600’s President

John Lindley has been reinstated as the national president of the International Cinematographers Guild (IATSE Local 600), a position he previously held from March 2020 to June 2022. During this time, he focused the Guild’s efforts on enhancing set safety following the tragic accidental death of Halyna Hutchins on the “Rust” movie set.

In 2022, he declared that he won’t seek another term as president. Lindley is set to take over from the current national president, Baird Benton Steptoe Sr.

35.6% of those eligible voted in the recent election, as indicated by the Guild. Preliminary count shows John Lindley leading with 1482 votes, followed closely by Dave Perkal with 685 and Steptoe, running for re-election, garnering 591 votes. However, it’s important to note that these results are not official until they are endorsed by the Local 600 election committee at their meeting on June 21st, which will then be approved by the outgoing national executive board.

Jamie Silverstein, with no opposition, is now set to serve as the National Vice President, operating from the Eastern region. Previously, Silverstein held the position of the National Assistant Secretary-Treasurer.

The group also voted to retain four national executive officials in their positions: Deborah Lipman, stationed in the Central region, as the first vice president; Mark Weingartner, from the Western region, as the second vice president; Stephen Wong, also from the Western region, as secretary-treasurer; and Betsy Peoples, based in the Central region, as sergeant-at-arms. Selene Preston was chosen as the assistant secretary-treasurer, representing the Eastern region.

Each of the newly elected officers will serve a three-year term, from June 2025 to June 2028.

Among the thirteen local unions operating under the IATSE Basic Agreement, Local 600 stands out as the largest one. This agreement, which has a term of three years, was most recently approved in the year 2024, subsequent to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited about this upcoming election because it signifies a new phase for our Guild. I firmly believe that the fresh faces leading our local teams will bring their unique perspectives, valuable experience, and relentless dedication to steer Local 600 through these challenging times.
