Former Chelsea star gets sacked from manager job hours after 8-0 win

In a surprising move, Filipe Luis was fired by Flamengo, the Brazilian soccer club, even though he had recently led them to some championship wins and an 8-0 victory in a game just before his departure.

Let me tell you, the Brazilian league is seriously competitive. And Flamengo? They feel the heat even more. Being one of the biggest and most respected clubs in South America, everyone’s always watching and expecting them to win, which adds a ton of pressure.

It’s strange that Luis lost his job right after winning so decisively, and it shows just how much pressure he was under.

Filipe Luis sacked by Flamengo despite huge win

Flamengo advanced to the Carioca cup final after a dominant performance against Madureira on Monday night. Although they already led 3-0 from the first leg, they scored eight more goals in the second leg, securing their place in the final.

Flamengo’s shaky start to the season – with one loss, one tie, and one win in their first three games – combined with disappointing performances in recent cup tournaments, led to coach Luis being fired.

Brazilian club Flamengo has decided to fire Filipe Luis, effective immediately. This decision comes after recent losses in the Supercopa do Brasil and CONMEBOL Recopa finals, despite a dominant 8-0 win against Madureira in the Carioca Semi-final.

The decision feels strangely timed. Now, someone new will take over Luis’s role and attempt to win another championship for the Brazilian team.

The board likely wasn’t pleased with Flamengo’s recent losses in cup games. They were defeated by Corinthians in the Brazilian Super Cup in early February, and then lost to Lanus in the CONMEBOL Recopa final last month.

Trophies weren’t enough to save Luis

Interestingly, Filipe Luis helped Flamengo win a trophy about once every 14 games.

Luis became Flamengo’s coach in September 2024 and quickly led the team to success, winning the Brazilian title, the Brazilian Cup, the Challenger Cup, and the Copa Libertadores – a competition they hadn’t won in three years. Despite winning seven trophies in just 18 months, it wasn’t enough to keep his position.

Luis played for Chelsea, where he was coached by the famous Jose Mourinho. He also played for Atletico Madrid and finished his career at Flamengo.

Okay, so last year I remember this team beat my former club at the Club World Cup – they were actually the only ones to do it before we eventually won the whole thing! But honestly? None of that even matters anymore.
