Recently, Bungie has found itself at the heart of various disputes, one of which involves claims that they used artwork assets without permission in their upcoming game, Marathon. In response to these accusations, Bungie stated that a former artist was responsible and that they are looking into the matter further. However, there have also been more recent whispers about Bungie’s work environment being affected by toxic management.
To Destin Legarie, previous IGN editor and now head of Save State Plus: Previous Bungie employees have expressed their concerns about the studio, alleging that leaders were prone to squash ideas and publicly reprimand staff. Additionally, it’s been suggested that Bungie’s management proposed a subscription service for Destiny, but this concept was met with strong opposition from the developers.
At Bungie, corporate culture is shown through an instance where the leadership reportedly had apprehensions regarding the armor sets obtainable in Destiny 2’s competitive multiplayer mode Trials of Osiris. The reason for this was that the design of these armor sets appeared too attractive and could potentially influence the sales of cosmetic downloadable content.
According to one ex-employee, the circumstances surrounding Bungie are due to excessive greed. Another former employee claims that Bungie’s current issues are rooted in a lack of understanding for the players, detached management, and a company culture prioritizing corporate interests over those of its users.
Over time, Bungie has encountered several challenges, one of which was a wave of layoffs that occurred after the launch of Destiny 2’s The Final Shape expansion. Among those affected were Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy, high-ranking executives at Bungie. Despite this, the public response to their recent project, Marathon, has been lukewarm as its creators appeal for patience from fans.
In Tamoor Hussain’s review for TopMob, he points out that Marathon has the makings of an excellent multiplayer shooter, but it falls short when it comes to content. This could be a significant problem in the highly competitive world of multiplayer games.
