Last October, Marc-Alexis Côté, who led the Assassin’s Creed game series, ended his 20-year career at Ubisoft. He revealed on LinkedIn that his departure wasn’t voluntary; he declined a new role offered by the company, which led to his dismissal. While he initially stated he didn’t blame Ubisoft, he has now filed a lawsuit against them.
Ubisoft sued
So, I was reading the news, and apparently this guy, Côté, is suing for a ton of money in Quebec’s Supreme Court. Radio-Canada says he’s asking for 1.3 million Canadian dollars – that’s around $935,000 US! It sounds like he wants two years’ worth of salary, plus an extra $75,000 to cover… well, basically the emotional distress of whatever happened. Crazy!
The lawsuit claimed that Mr. Côté’s power was likely to decrease after the creation of Vantage Studios, which now managed the Assassin’s Creed games. Previously, he had reported directly to Yves Guillemot.
Last summer, Côté found out Ubisoft was seeking a new leader for the Assassin’s Creed series during a board meeting. However, it seems Yves Guillemot didn’t support his candidacy, as the role was intended to be located in France, not Quebec. As a result, Côté was given the choice between a lower-level production position or leaving the company.
The developer believed he was effectively forced to resign – a situation he considered unacceptable – and requested severance pay from Ubisoft. Ubisoft asked him to stay home starting October 13th, then announced his “voluntary departure” the following day. The lawsuit argues this was done to avoid paying him severance.
The text also conveyed that both Côté and Ubisoft declined to comment on the matter.
