After much speculation, Ubisoft has confirmed they’re remaking their popular pirate game, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced. While an official announcement hasn’t happened yet, it’s expected soon. If you can’t wait to embark on a pirate adventure, a new pirate game is available now.
The new survival adventure game, Windrose, is now available in early access on Steam and is already receiving positive feedback. Created by Kraken Express (with support from the developers of Palworld, Pocketpair), Windrose lets you play alone or with up to three friends. Many players are comparing it to Skull and Bones, but are impressed with how much content and gameplay it offers, even though it’s still under development.
Windrose Just Released In Steam Early Access
Windrose became available in early access on April 14, 2026, and there are two versions to choose from, both currently 10% off for one week. The game itself costs $26.99 (usually $29.99), and a Supporter Bundle is also available if you’d like to help support Windrose’s ongoing development. This bundle is on sale for $35.98 (normally $39.98) and includes the game’s soundtrack – featuring atmospheric music and sea shanties – plus a collection of wallpapers for your computer, tablet, and phone.
One of the best things about Windrose is its cooperative play, which the developers designed to be most enjoyable with four players. But even if you play alone, Windrose offers a lot to do! It mixes several different gameplay styles, including challenging combat inspired by the Souls series (with tough boss fights), a slow but steady sense of progression like in survival games, crafting, building a base, and exciting naval battles. Similar to Valheim (which is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2), Windrose creates unique worlds each time you play, filled with a variety of different landscapes.
Early User Reviews Are “Very Positive”
It’s still early days for Windrose, but initial reactions from players in early access are looking good. As of right now, the game has a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, meaning 88% of players recommend it. Those who enjoy the game often compare it to popular survival and crafting titles like Valheim and Enshrouded. However, some players have reported bugs and balance problems, especially when playing the single-player mode.
Windrose has a lot of development still ahead, as the creators, like many small studios, have launched it as an early access game. It’s too soon to say how it will turn out, but initial impressions suggest a promising co-op pirate adventure. While Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced will likely reignite interest in pirate games, Windrose offers a unique approach to the genre and has gotten off to a great start.
