Forget About Last Year’s Golden Globes

As a seasoned cinephile with over two decades of immersion in the world of film and comedy, I must say that Nikki Glaser’s 2024 has been nothing short of electrifying for a comedian. Her Tom Brady roast went viral, her special “Someday You’ll Die” was met with critical acclaim, and her stint on “Everybody’s in L.A” was the cherry on top. Now, she’s taking the plunge to revamp the 2025 Golden Globe Awards – a task that seems as daunting as hosting a party after New Year’s Eve when everyone’s still nursing their hangovers.

2024 has undeniably been an exceptional year for me as a comedian; I went viral with my hilarious Tom Brady roast, my special, “Someday You’ll Die,” received rave reviews, and I was fortunate enough to appear on “Everybody’s in L.A.” Now, I’m eagerly looking forward to shaking things up at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards! These prestigious awards will be broadcasted on January 5, a date that seems fitting as we all recover from ringing out the old year. It’s an absolute dream come true for me to be hosting this event; the Golden Globes have always been one of my favorite TV nights, and now I get to be part of the action (or should I say, stand on stage instead of just watching it).

Historically, the Golden Globes have been a platform where comedians shine, with figures like Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler delivering memorable monologues. However, the 2024 awards were a difficult night for host Jo Koy, and Jerrod Carmichael’s unconventional approach in the previous year remains one of the more peculiar moments in recent award show history. Now, it falls upon Nikki “Swiftie” Glaser to eclipse those less than stellar performances. Interestingly enough, she seems eager to emulate the style of Fey and Poehler: “Some of my favorite jokes have come from opening monologues at past Golden Globes when Tina, Amy, or Ricky spoke what we all didn’t know we needed to hear. I just hope to keep that tradition alive (and maybe get myself canceled in the process).” Here’s hoping, for Nikki’s sake, that Taylor Swift shows more smiles this year than she did during Koy’s hosting stint.
