“Forever” has been renewed for a second season at Netflix.
The announcement was made at Netflix’s presentation in New York on a Wednesday, following the premiere of Season 1 on May 8, which ranked third on Netflix’s Top 10 list with approximately 3.7 million views in its initial four days of broadcasting online.
Originating from Mara Brock Akil, the TV series “Forever” is a modern take on Judy Blume’s 1975 novel of the same name, where the main characters are now Black teenagers residing in Los Angeles in 2018. In this adaptation, Michael Cooper Jr. and Lovie Simone portray Justin Edwards and Keisha Clark, who navigate the complexities of love and self-discovery as they embark on their initial romantic experiences together, as suggested by the show’s synopsis. Alongside them, you will see Karen Pittman, Wood Harris, Xosha Roquemore, Marvin Winans III, Niles Fitch, Barry Shabaka Henley, Ali Gallo, Adriyan Rae, Paigion Walker, Xavier Mills, E’myri Crutchfield and Yusef Thomas in the cast.
Akil assumes the role of showrunner while also serving as an executive producer, working alongside Blume, Susie Fitzgerald, Erika Harrison, Sara White, Regina King, Reina King (possibly a typo for Regina), Shana C. Waterman, and Anthony Hemingway.
“Akil stated that the series was more than just portraying first love; it was about being acknowledged and allowing teenagers to be authentic and complex. The audience responded positively, and now we’re eager to return the favor in Season 2. We’re thrilled, we’re ready, and we can’t wait to delve even further. Thank you, Netflix, for bringing this journey to us – Season 2 is on its way!”
