For the Fourth Time in Forever, We’re Getting More Frozen

As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has weathered countless cinematic storms, I must confess that my initial response to the news of not one, but two upcoming Frozen sequels is a mix of excitement and trepidation.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about Disney’s persistence with the beloved “Frozen” franchise. Here are some fresh insights into the upcoming sequels – yes, two of them! – including recent revelations from D23 regarding the potential release date and concept art for “Frozen 3.”

It’s happening

2023-11-16: It seems that Disney’s blockbuster “Frozen 3” hasn’t yet left the cold storage (it’s tucked away in the back, nestled between TikTok’s frosty responses to “Wish”), but when has a minor obstacle like the passage of time ever hindered Bob Iger? Recently, on “Good Morning America,” Disney’s CEO made an intriguing announcement while discussing the new “World of Frozen” section at Hong Kong Disneyland. He teased Michael Strahan, saying, “There’s a project for ‘Frozen 3’ in motion, and there might even be a ‘Frozen 4’ in development as well.” Iger didn’t divulge many details, only mentioning that writer-director Jennifer Lee is diligently working with her team at Disney Animation on not just one but two stories. To use a layman’s term, it appears they’re gearing up for something similar to the “Avatar” approach.

The storyline for Frozen 3 remains unclear, and the confusing ending of the first sequel didn’t provide a clear direction for the franchise. However, the Frozen podcast, Disney Frozen: Forces of Nature, launched by Disney and Wondery in October, is filling in some gaps. This weekly series serves both as a sequel and spinoff, offering additional Frozen lore. New characters have been introduced, such as Wolfgang, the nephew of the Duke of Weselton, and Queen Disa from a neighboring kingdom who fits the mold of the STEM-focused female characters Disney often creates (similar to the live-action Dumbo girl and Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast). If you’re open to listening to 12 episodes of a children’s podcast, there’s plenty of new information to be found.

Still defrosting

On August 9, 2024: It’s been some time since we last received news about the continuation of “Frozen”, but fret not, as the plans for the sequel haven’t frozen over yet. At this year’s D23 Expo, Disney revealed that “Frozen 3” is set to hit theaters in 2027. A glimpse of the upcoming movie was given through concept art showing Elsa, Anna, and Olaf riding horses. Although we didn’t catch a glimpse of “Frozen 4”, it appears that the project is still in development. Writer-director Jennifer Lee hinted, “There were many questions arising from ‘Frozen 2’. It will take two movies to address them.”
