In five months, Sony’s PlayStation 5 will celebrate its fifth birthday, and as they look ahead, Sony has shared their ideas about what lies in store for the PlayStation platform. During a corporate gathering led by key Sony leaders, president and CEO Hideaki Nishino addressed questions regarding future PlayStation hardware, hinting at whether a successor to the PS5, or a PS6 console, is on the horizon given the advancements in cloud gaming technology over time.
As stated by Nishino, the technical aspects of cloud gaming are advancing nicely, yet there are difficulties such as maintaining network stability throughout the entire process that Sony cannot fully manage. Nishino also noted that cloud gaming is a viable choice for players, providing them with access to a broader range of content, but the preference among most PlayStation users for playing games locally through physical media or direct console downloads remains strong.
In simpler terms, Nishino stated that cloud gaming offers an extra choice for gamers to access content, but he thinks most players still prefer playing games directly on their devices, not relying on network conditions. He believes the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro have shown this preference.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but be intrigued by the whispers about the next-gen PlayStation console. Nishino has been keeping quiet, but he did share that our beloved console business has grown into a diverse platform, with a massive community of enthusiastic players spanning both the PS5 and PS4 eras. Needless to say, we’re all eagerly waiting to learn more about their strategy for the next-gen console. Although Nishino didn’t reveal any specifics just yet, it’s clear that they are actively working on a fresh and upgraded experience for us players to enjoy their content and services.
It seems that the PS6 might not be available for some time, as a former PlayStation executive suggested that if it launches in 2028, that timing would fit well with the usual lifespan of console generations, which is approximately seven years.
In 2024, it emerged that Intel had aggressively aimed to manufacture chips for the PS6, yet Sony opted to continue with AMD. This means PlayStation gamers will have to exercise patience. However, Sony did offer a mid-generation upgrade in 2023, which they referred to as the PS5 Pro.
