Wes Johnson, the Elder Scrolls series veteran voice actor who recovered from a health scare thanks to fans donating over $140,000 for medical expenses, made an appearance at today’s Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered unveiling. There, he delved into the historical roots and updates of the classic RPG. Accompanying him was his dog Finn, and although it’s uncertain why, it’s heartening to see him there with his pet.
Johnson frequently incorporated different character voices into the conversation. He talked about his past experiences with Oblivion and shared his thoughts on the remaster done by Virtuos Studios, who had already excelled in the Dark Souls Remastered project.
“Oblivion, to me, was where I came out to play,” he said of his voice acting career.
“I loved that game,” he added.
Moving forward, Johnson highlights the 10th Anniversary Edition of Skyrim. “The moment I played it on the Xbox Series X, let me tell you, the graphics left me speechless,” he expressed.
To achieve the same atmosphere, style, gameplay, and graphics as Oblivion today, it’s a mystery if, when I approach a woman in one of the towns and gently tap her shoulder, she won’t resemble Terry Jones in a Monty Python sketch. If that were to happen, I’m unsure how to react, but I adore this game.
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement! Now, we all have the opportunity to rediscover it with fresh perspectives. For those who have merely dabbled in Skyrim, prepare for an enlightening experience, almost like seeing it for the first time.
Despite the acclaimed successor games Skyrim and Oblivion, Morrowind remains cherished by dedicated fans who consider it Bethesda’s pinnacle RPG achievement.
In terms of tone and design, Oblivion distinguishes itself from games like Skyrim and other role-playing games of its time. It’s often commended for its exceptional world-building and non-player characters (NPCs). Additionally, it has an endearing, somewhat quirky appeal that sets it apart.
If you’re transitioning from Skyrim to Oblivion, even with its updated version, be prepared to discover a fresh perspective on the same Bethesda-designed game environment.
Johnson stated that the post-broadcast chat with host Jessica Finster, who is a senior community director at Bethesda Softworks, was his initial viewing of the remastered version, and he was particularly impressed by the level of detail in the environments, characters’ clothing, armor, NPC faces, and expressions. He commended the noticeable improvement in quality and attention to realism. Moreover, he confirmed that “all the voices in this are the same,” alleviating concerns about Oblivion’s unique charm potentially being diminished during its transition to modern-day gaming.
The game The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is now available for purchase at $50. You can play it on your PC, Xbox Series X (with Game Pass), and PS5. During the live coverage of its remaster, there was a hint towards The Elder Scrolls 6 by Todd Howard, who mentioned, “Of course, we’re currently developing the sixth installment here.
