The poignant scene was made even more special by unexpected appearances from familiar faces. Ed, 81 years old, had been keeping his illness a secret from his adopted daughter, Kelly (Cynthy Wu), and his grandson, Alex (Sean Kaufman).

In season 5, episode 3 of For All Mankind, Ed Baldwin’s health finally gave way after he risked everything to help Lee Jung-Gil (C.S. Lee) escape. Despite his doctor’s warnings, the aging Ed insisted on flying the mission, and the pressure of organizing Lee’s breakout took a serious toll on his already weakened condition. In the final moments of For All Mankind season 5, Ed Baldwin doesn’t experience a life flashback. Instead, he’s taken back to one of the most fulfilling times in his life: when he commanded a Gemini mission for NASA and orbited the Earth. We see a younger Ed preparing for this pivotal moment, reunited with his longtime friend and colleague, Gordo Stevens (Michael Dorman).

As Ed and Gordo walked towards the spacecraft, people cheered for them, recognizing their bravery. But the show had one last surprise: Ed’s former wife, Karen Baldwin, and their son, Shane, were also there to say goodbye. Surrounded by the people he loved most, Ed found peace and passed away. For Ed, the ultimate paradise was being in orbit around the Earth.

In season 5, episode 3 of For All Mankind, the show hinted at potential returns for Karen and Gordo. As a critic, I have to say the final moments with Ed in For All Mankind were truly exceptional. Seeing Gordo and Karen with him as he passed away felt like the absolute perfect culmination of his story. It beautifully suggests that all the mistakes and struggles he and those around him faced simply don’t matter anymore. He finally gets to be the astronaut, the hero, the loving husband, father, and friend he always strived to be – a version of himself he almost, but didn’t quite, achieve while he was alive.

Ed had a deep love for both Karen and Gordo, but also carries regrets regarding his relationships with them. In season 3 of For All Mankind, Karen and Ed were divorced when she tragically died in a terrorist attack on the Johnson Space Center during the finale. Ed was unable to help, being stranded 140 million miles away on Mars.

Gordo and Ed were complete opposites – Gordo was a womanizer and struggled with alcohol – but they shared a close, brotherly bond. Like brothers, they often argued. Ed was powerless to help Gordo or his former wife, Tracy (Sarah Jones), when they tragically died in the season 2 finale of For All Mankind. The Stevens couple succumbed to exposure on the moon after successfully rescuing Jamestown Base, which they had helped build alongside Gordo, Ed, and Danielle Poole (Krys Marshall) in season 1.

As Ed slipped away, I realized Karen and Gordo were clearly on his mind – people he truly cherished. He also thought of Shane, and it was clear he carried a lot of regret about their relationship. Before the awful accident that took young Shane’s life, Ed was a really tough, impatient dad. He could definitely be a bit of a jerk sometimes, even to Alex, but it seemed like he was determined to be a better grandpa than he ever was a father to Shane.

Apple TV+’s sci-fi series, For All Mankind, follows humanity’s challenging journey into space, but it always remembers the characters we’ve grown to care about.
