Florida receptionist arrested for spending $400K overpayment she thought was job bonus

A Florida resident was taken into custody following accusations that she had spent more than $400,000 in excess wages she thought were a bonus from her job.

Thirty-nine-year-old Yessica Arrua, who works as a receptionist at the Palm Beach Equine Clinic, has been accused of crimes related to grand theft and money laundering. It’s alleged that she used funds intended for other purposes, totaling hundreds of thousands, from misdirected salary payments that never belonged to her.

As per a police report acquired by The Daily Mail, it appears that there was an error in the payroll system, leading Arrua to mistakenly receive a check worth that of a vet earning $450,000 instead of her original $60,000 wage.

For almost a year, the vet, whose details were incorrectly associated with Arrua’s account, remained unpaid without realizing it.

Florida woman says she thought she received $400K as a “bonus”

The inconsistency apparently surfaced in early 2023 when the clinic’s Chief Financial Officer discovered the mistake and reached out to the payroll service. According to investigators, Arrua acknowledged knowing about the substantial payments, but failed to disclose the problem. Instead, she thought it was a “bonus” based on rumors that the previous receptionist had received one.

It’s claimed that she reportedly splurged the excess funds on high-end items from Coach and Michael Kors, furnishings, meals at restaurants, and over $3,000 in Zelle transactions to an individual named “Mama Dukes.” Additionally, it is said that she invested $80,000 in purchasing a food truck for a close friend, and transferred a substantial amount to Argentina for constructing a house.

In time, Arrua finally admitted to wrongdoing upon being faced with the vet who hadn’t been paid. The vet discovered an issue only when their credit cards were rejected and they examined their financial statements.

Approximately $200,000 out of the total overpaid sum of $414,000 has not been spent yet. Arrua acknowledged that she wouldn’t be able to return the full amount, which includes the $100,000 her mother had sent overseas.

She is currently being held at the Palm Beach Main Detention Center.
