Following the murder of Gabby, investigators discovered that Brian Laundrie spoke to his mother Roberta Laundrie for an hour afterwards. Not long after this conversation, Brian’s father, Christopher Laundrie, contacted a lawyer.
Initially, both Brian Laundrie’s parents and his sister, Cassie Laundrie, were characterized as unhelpful, declining to give clear responses regarding the events that transpired. As a result, they are now receiving criticism not just from online communities but also from locals.

Some residents in North Port, Florida, who live near Christopher and Roberta, have shared that their social exclusion increased following the media coverage of the case, but it has become more pronounced after the airing of the documentary “American Murder: Gabby Petito.
Speaking to the New York Post, Miriam Woodby, living close to the Laundrie residence, expressed her growing irritation. “The more I observed,” she said, “the angrier I became. Whenever I pass their house, a sense of nausea rises in me. I dislike them intensely, despite never having met them. I wish they would simply depart.

Living close to The Laundries, Jorge Ruiz shared that some local residents have disrespectfully discarded trash in their yard, such as dog feces and used diapers. On more than one instance, he observed individuals hurling offensive remarks at Roberta upon her departure from her home, en route to her vehicle.

Why American Murder viewers are angry
Prior to the murder of Gabby, Roberta was already facing accusations that she distanced herself from Gabby when Brian and she moved in with the Laundrie family in Florida.
In the Netflix documentary, Gabby’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, describes her jealousy as quite unusual.
