Florida man arrested for drunk driving lawn mower on highway

A man from Florida was apprehended for driving under the influence (DUI) when he operated a riding lawnmower on a turnpike, which is typically used for cars, while intoxicated.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that an unusual incident took place around 8:30 a.m. on July 18, close to the U.S. 98 exit on the Suncoast Parkway in Hernando County. This occurred when troopers were dispatched following several reports of a man operating a lawnmower along the highway’s shoulder.

Upon their arrival, officers discovered Christopher Spain, aged 38, was still operating the lawnmower. He exhibited a number of indicators suggesting impairment such as constricted pupils, flushed complexion, dry tongue, and a scratchy throat.

Refused sobriety test

According to troopers, during the interaction, Spain appeared to sniff, cough, and spit. He attempted the field sobriety test on three separate occasions but ultimately decided not to proceed any further. Additionally, after his arrest, he refused to give a urine sample for testing.

Spain ended up being detained at the Hernando County Jail, but was later freed on a $500 bond. Charges of driving under the influence were brought against him, and he also received a citation for using a vehicle on a restricted access roadway.

Florida’s legislation considers operating a lawn mower like driving a car during DUI investigations. Precedents exist of such incidents, where people have been charged for using a mower under the influence while on public highways.

In June, yet another individual from Florida was taken into custody for trespassing at a restaurant. Instead of honoring the establishment’s boundaries, he had entered the premises to charge his Tesla vehicle. However, his actions didn’t go unnoticed for long; he was identified and apprehended after forgetting his electric vehicle’s charger on the property.
