As a long-time gaming enthusiast who remembers the days of Flappy Bird‘s brief but impactful reign, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions upon learning about its comeback. While it’s exciting to see one of my favorite mobile games make a return, the circumstances surrounding this event are less than ideal.
In the world of gaming, comebacks aren’t unheard of, but the recent announcement that Flappy Bird is making a reappearance took many by surprise. This game was an instant sensation on app stores following its debut in 2013, but it was unexpectedly taken down by its creator, Dong Nguyen, in 2014. However, after years of silence on social media, Nguyen has finally spoken up about the return of his iconic game.
As a gamer, I want to clarify some misconceptions straight away. Contrary to rumors, I, personally, have nothing to do with the latest version of the game. I didn’t sell the original Flappy Bird, either. This statement is in response to certain speculations, possibly linked to Michael Roberts, the creative force behind the Flappy Bird Foundation. It seems his company, 1208 Productions, has been deeply involved with NFTs and crypto. However, I want to make it clear that any potential integration of these elements into the new Flappy Bird is not something I’m directly involved in.
No, I have no related with their game. I did not sell anything.
I also don’t support crypto.— Dong Nguyen (@dongatory) September 15, 2024
According to IGN, Roberts obtained the ownership of Flappy Bird from a firm called Gametech Holdings LLC. It’s important to note that Gametech wasn’t involved in the development of Flappy Bird; instead, they challenged Nguyen’s initial patent for the game with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Gametech asserted that Nguyen had relinquished the patent, and when he didn’t answer notices regarding it, the USPTO ended his claim.
Although it might be lawful, the move effectively severed Nguyen from his own invention, leaving him with limited options to intervene. Many fans may not even grasp that the Flappy Bird Foundation holds no connection to Nguyen. The company plans to re-launch a new version of Flappy Bird later in the year on various platforms.
