FKA Twigs In Talks to Star as Josephine Baker in Studiocanal’s Biopic From ‘Cuties’ Director Maimouna Doucouré

The award-winning musician FKA Twigs is discussing potential roles for an upcoming biographical film about Josephine Baker, a groundbreaking performer known for her dancing, singing, and acting, who was born in America but lived primarily in France. This movie will be helmed by Maimouna Doucouré, the director behind “Cuties.

Studiocanal is funding and collaborating on the production of the film, while also taking charge of international distribution. Bien ou Bien Prods, Doucouré’s production company, is producing alongside Studiocanal, along with CPB Films. The biopic has also gained support from Josephine Baker’s sons, Jean-Claude Bouillon Baker and Brian Bouillon Baker, as well as the Rainbow Tribe, a term Baker used to refer to her numerous adopted children.

In the year 1927, Baker, an innovative performer and advocate for civil rights, made history as the first black woman to take the leading role in a significant film production titled “The Siren of the Tropics,” thereby breaking new ground in cinema.

Upcoming, FKA Twigs will appear in the film “The Carpenter’s Son,” sharing the screen with Nicolas Cage. Most recently, she acted alongside Bill Skarsgård in Lionsgate’s reboot of “The Crow.” Previously, she garnered acclaim for her role alongside Noah Jupe in Alma Har’el’s film “Honey Boy.” Earlier this year, FKA Twigs put out her third studio album titled “Eusexua.

Born and raised in Paris to parents of Senegalese descent, Doucouré is one of France’s uncommon Black filmmakers producing feature films. Her short film “Maman(s)”, initially screened at Sundance and awarded a Cesar, was influenced by her upbringing in a polygamous family. Her contentious debut feature, “Cuties”, which addressed the issue of child sexualization, earned best director at Sundance. Doucouré was also granted the Academy Gold Fellowship for Women from the Academy Women’s Initiative. The initial news about FKA Twigs’ casting was shared by Satellifacts.
