Regarding The Handmaid’s Tale, it’s advisable to set aside any doubts and simply immerse yourself in the story (let the plot holes be blessings, so to speak). However, there’s one continuity issue that Season 6 needs to tackle, and I’m optimistic that it will be resolved before the series concludes permanently.

Over many years, I’ve closely followed Hulu’s dystopian show The Handmaid’s Tale, and I understand that its inconsistencies in the storyline are more numerous than the questionable deaths in Gilead. For instance, it’s not surprising that Emily seems to have fully recovered after her time at the Colonies. Similarly, Moira’s seemingly effortless escape can be overlooked.

Without a doubt, one could question miraculously, how June, with her rebellious actions such as striking her Commander, masterminding the liberation of 86 kids from Gilead, aiding Emily in escaping with her child, and evading capture, remains alive.

Currently, as stated, it’s advisable to set aside our expectations – The Handmaid’s Tale wouldn’t be the same without June’s frowning face dominating the scene. Moreover, one of the reasons she manages to evade detection is due to her powerful lover and father of her child, Nick Blaine.

The Handmaid’s Tale needs to fix its Nick problem

Let’s delve into the inconsistency we’re examining today regarding Nick’s swift advancement from a driver to Commander. Granted, he had the role of an Eye, but his access to Gilead’s secrets and his seamless interactions with Mayday and June raise a point worth pondering: why was he promoted instead of being eliminated?

In the later seasons of the captivating television series, doubts about the authenticity of his power and sway within the society of Gilead have grown progressively more pronounced.

Despite the fact that Nick’s actions were significant – he aided June in killing Commander Waterford, an act that would have set off alarms throughout the entire leadership of Gilead – he doesn’t seem to be facing any serious consequences for it.

In Season 4, although assigned to the battlefront in Chicago, Nick has not just survived but has become the de facto power broker within the regime. He successfully prevents Commander Joseph Lawrence’s execution, and by the culmination of Season 5, both of them share control over the operations.

These are the same individuals, Nick and Joseph, that have covertly been acting in opposition to the government, concealing their genuine allegiances. As for Joseph’s loyalties, they remain uncertain; however, it appears that Nick is determined to safeguard June, regardless of the potential consequences.

As a devoted fan, I must admit, the intricacies of “The Handmaid’s Tale” sometimes leave me bewildered. I eagerly anticipate the show addressing the enigma surrounding Nick, as his character has been a bit perplexing so far.

Why Season 6 could solve the plot hole

In the last and climactic season, there’s a strong possibility that Nick will encounter repercussions for his past deeds. It may not end on a positive note, but it seems appropriate that his conclusion is a tragic one, reflecting the oppressive world he unwittingly contributed to building.

If Luke chose to flee Gilead and be with June and Nicole, it’s clear that he wouldn’t embrace the idea of being in a three-person relationship (regardless of where he might wind up, including possibly in prison).

It appears that things are not going well for Nick in the season 5 finale. Following his confrontation with Joseph Lawrence where he punched him in the presence of the other commanders, he exclaimed, “You might have ended her life,” alluding to June.

After exhibiting such rebellion, he’s found confined within a detention room. His long-suffering wife Rose, at last, has had enough of his antics and declares that she no longer wishes to stand by him because he persists in holding on to June.

Not only does the government of Gilead disapprove of Nick’s relationship with a “terhandoff” due to political reasons, but his wife, whose father is the elusive and powerful High Commander Wharton, also dislikes it intensely.

If Nick somehow escapes this situation without any damage, it suggests that Gilead’s most formidable asset isn’t fear, control, but rather an almost invincible plot protection.

If the government’s heavy hand is imposed upon him, alas, it might resolve the main inconsistency in the series before the final season ends and concludes this phase of the narrative permanently.
