Fisher Stevens to Direct Ozone Drama ‘The Montreal Protocol’ From Highly Flammable and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way (EXCLUSIVE)

As a movie buff who’s seen my fair share of environmental disaster films, I can confidently say that “The Montreal Protocol” is shaping up to be one of the most inspiring and important stories to hit the big screen in recent years. Fisher Stevens, with his knack for tackling compelling narratives, is the perfect choice to helm this project. The story of Dr. Susan Solomon’s groundbreaking research and the global effort that followed to repair the ozone layer is a testament to what can be achieved when the world unites in the face of a crisis.

Director Fisher Stevens, known for his work on “Beckham,” is preparing to lead the charge on the climate drama titled “The Montreal Protocol.” This film will tell the inspiring tale of unsung heroes, a group of scientists who bravely tackled the challenge of repairing the ozone layer’s hole. Their efforts ultimately prevented a worldwide environmental disaster from occurring.

Jess Kimball Leslie, known for “Kings of America,” is reworking a story currently being developed at Highly Flammable Productions, in collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way (famous for “The Right Stuff” and “The Revenant”), New State Pictures, and Curiosity Rights. RandomGood Films, the team behind “Beyond Utopia,” is funding the project’s development.

RandomGood, Highly Flammable, and Appian collaborated most recently on “We Are Guardians.”

The effort to mend the ozone hole, initiated back in the 1970s and lasting more than two decades, is widely regarded as one of the greatest victories in environmental protection history.

Dr. Susan Solomon’s research on atmospheric science led to the discovery of what was tearing a hole in the Earth’s uppermost protective layer. This finding paved the way to prevent a disaster. At age 30, along with a group of U.S. scientists, Solomon traveled to Antarctica to gather vital evidence that linked chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) to ozone depletion. Without this protective layer, our planet would face harmful levels of UV radiation and a potential disaster by 2065 might have occurred.

Solomon’s journey to Antarctica, braving harsh conditions and potential damage to their own standing, sparked a change in public perception about the crisis at hand. This shift in public sentiment, in turn, influenced global leaders’ attitudes towards the issue. Ultimately, this led to the creation of the Montreal Protocol, an environmental treaty that has been ratified by all nations and remains the world’s sole universally accepted global environmental agreement to this day.

Stevens emphasized that the global cooperation among scientists, governments, businesses, media, and consumers, embodied in ‘The Montreal Protocol’, demonstrates the potential outcomes when the world joins forces to tackle a challenge. In our current situation, collaboration and bravery are crucial as we aim to repair the harm done to Earth before it’s irreversible. We’ve overcome such problems before, and with determination, we can do so again!

In a new endeavor, Stevens, known for his work on “Palmer,” “The Lincoln Project,” and the Emmy-winning “Beckham” among other productions, will collaborate with Zak Kilberg and Maura Anderson from Highly Flammable to produce “The Montreal Project.” The production companies Appian Way (Phillip Watson, Jennifer Davisson, and Leonardo DiCaprio), New State Pictures (Ana Emdin), Curiosity Rights (J.D. Zacharias), and RandomGood Films (Christopher Gebhardt and Randy Gebhardt) will also be involved in this project.

Highly Flammable is represented by WME and Gray Schwartz LLP, while Fisher is also represented by WME, Untitled Entertainment, and Danny Passman. Lastly, Kimball Leslie is represented by WME, TFC, and Yorn Levine.
