Talk about a possible Xbox handheld device is picking up again, following reports from people familiar with Microsoft’s plans for future Xbox consoles and hardware.
Recently, there’s been talk about a new Xbox console that would run on Windows. However, a new report suggests that Xbox hasn’t given up on creating its own handheld gaming device, even though some people thought that idea was cancelled.
Microsoft hasn’t forgotten about making a portable Xbox device, according to Windows Central. While they’re currently prioritizing development of their next major Xbox console, a handheld is still on the roadmap for the future.
Microsoft is still said to want a first-party Xbox handheld
According to the report, the handheld project isn’t the company’s main focus right now, but they still plan to work on it as part of their overall strategy to bring Xbox games and services to different devices.
This signals a change from earlier reports claiming Microsoft had abandoned plans to create its own handheld gaming device, and would instead partner with other companies to make them.
These initiatives involve devices like the ROG Xbox Ally X, which Microsoft once showcased as a potential glimpse into how future Xbox games could be played on handheld PCs. Developed with ASUS, the device uses Windows and features software specifically designed for Xbox gaming.

Windows Central didn’t say when Microsoft might release its own handheld gaming device, or what its specs would be. They reported that Microsoft is currently focused on making gaming better on Windows and developing the next Xbox console.
AMD executives have suggested Microsoft’s next game console might arrive around 2027, but a portable version is not expected to launch at the same time.
The report suggests Microsoft is interested in a portable Xbox for the future, but it’s not planning to release one anytime soon. Details like how much it would cost, how well it would perform, and when it might launch are still unknown.
