First Look at Survival Thriller ‘A Prayer for the Dying’ Starring John C. Reilly and Johnny Flynn (EXCLUSIVE)

As a cinephile with a penchant for historical dramas and survival thrillers, I find myself genuinely intrigued by the upcoming production “A Prayer for the Dying.” The casting of John C. Reilly and Johnny Flynn, two versatile actors known for their nuanced performances, adds an exciting layer to this already captivating story.

In the initial glimpse of “A Prayer for the Dying,” a survival-based thriller currently being filmed near Bratislava, Slovakia, John C. Reilly and Johnny Flynn appear thoughtful.

Anton and New Europe Films are jointly representing global distribution rights for the movie, and will also be handling sales during the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival.

“A Prayer for the Dying” is penned and helmed by Dara Van Dusen, inspired by Stewart O’Nan’s book. The story unfolds in 1870, in the small Scandinavian-settled town of Friendship, Wisconsin, which is still grappling with the aftermath of the Civil War. As a fresh, more perilous danger looms, one man finds himself in a heart-wrenching predicament: to safeguard his family or protect the community that offered him a new lease on life and purpose. Flynn will portray Jacob Hansen, the town sheriff tasked with its security, while Reilly assumes the role of the local physician.

In addition, the upcoming feature will showcase the talents of Scandinavian performers Kristine Kujath Thorp (known for “Ninjababy” and “Sick of Myself”) and Gustav Lindh (“The Northman,” “Queen of Hearts”).

Hailing from New York but now living in Oslo, Norway, Van Dusen is a talented writer and director who has garnered numerous development and production grants from the Norwegian Film Institute. Her short film “Significant Others” was showcased in the Cannes Official Selection, while her latest work, “The Blind Man,” an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s short story, was nominated for Best Nordic Short and chosen for the Nordic Panorama. In terms of representation, she is handled by Rowena Wallace at Peach House.

This film is brought to you by Dyveke Bjørkly Graver and Andrea Berentsen Ottmar from Eye Eye Pictures, who have also worked on Joachim Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World” and Kristoffer Borgli’s “Sick of Myself.” Co-producers include Mimmi Spång for Garagefilm International, Tristan Goligher for The Bureau, Vicky Miha for Asterisk*, Fenia Cossovitsa for Blonde Audiovisual Productions, Zahra Waldeck for Banaccas Film, Film i Väst, Mediefondet Zefyr, John Baker, and more. It received backing from Creative Europe, Norwegian Film Institute, Swedish Film Institute, UK Global Screen Fund, and Greek Film Center.

Flynn is managed by both United Agents and CAA, whereas Reilly is handled by CAA and Framework Entertainment. Similarly, Kristine Kujath Thorp and Gustav Lindh are both under the care of Agentfirman and Aleksandra Mandic.
