In the upcoming dark comedy “The Roses,” Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are set to shine, with Jay Roach directing. Known for his work on films like “Austin Powers” and “Meet the Parents,” this will be Roach’s first feature film since 2019’s “Bombshell.” Reminiscent of the 1989 movie “The War of the Roses,” which was based on Warren Adler’s 1981 novel, “The Roses” is a fresh take on that story. Searchlight Pictures recently released the first trailer, hinting at a potentially entertaining film experience.
As a keen observer, I must confess that Theo, portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, and Ivy, played by Olivia Colman, seem like the epitome of a harmonious couple. They both excel in their respective careers – he as an architect, she as a chef – and are blessed with delightful offspring. However, beneath this idyllic surface lies a hidden turmoil. Their marriage is more akin to a smoldering time bomb, waiting to detonate for the world to see. The stellar cast includes Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, and Allison Janney. The script is penned by Tony McNamara, who has both amazed us with “Cruella” and left us puzzled with “Poor Things”. But this project promises a wealth of potential, and who could resist the allure of an on-screen pairing between Cumberbatch and Colman?
