As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with a soft spot for the DC universe, I find myself torn between excitement and apprehension regarding James Gunn’s takeover at DC Studios. On one hand, I’ve been captivated by Zack Snyder’s cinematic vision and have felt the pain of its dismantlement. On the other, I can’t deny that I’ve been less than thrilled with some of Gunn’s superhero projects. But hey, who doesn’t love a good underdog story?
There’s been a lot of discussion, both positive and negative, regarding James Gunn taking over as head of DC Studios. It’s clear that he has his supporters who aren’t shy about expressing their approval. However, there are just as many people who are hesitant, and for valid reasons. I’m a big fan of the Zack Snyder-led DC universe before it was altered drastically by the studio. As for Gunn’s superhero projects, I must admit I’ve been less than enthusiastic because they often stick to familiar patterns. But I’m eager to see what he plans for DC, particularly with “Superman”.
The first teaser trailer for Gunn’s “Superman” has dropped and it gives us a first glance at the film that will kick off his DC universe. The trailer doesn’t reveal much but it allows us to see David Corenswet in action as both Superman and Clark Kent. We see Rachel Brosnahan as the new Lois Lane. We see Nicholas Hoult as the universe’s Lex Luthor. We even see a caped Krypto which brought an ear-to-ear smile to my face.
But the trailer is littered with other heroes and villains which speaks to one of my biggest concerns – is Gunn cramming too much into his first film. We’ll see. And while the trailer offers a number of captivating images, I still don’t have a good feel of the movie or of Gunn’s vision for the character. Will he capture the essence of Superman? Can he make Superman resonate with a new audience? Can he win over those who preferred a “Man of Steel” sequel? Who knows. But I’ll be there on opening day to see.
