As we eagerly await the release of a new Superman movie this year, the DC Universe is expanding not only on screen but also on television. However, when it comes to video games, there’s exciting news: DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran confirm that DCU games are indeed in development, though we may have to wait a few more years before they hit the shelves.
According to Safran, our team collaborates extensively with JB Perrette, who oversees the streaming and games division at Warner Brothers. This is a unique level of collaboration that hasn’t been seen before within Warner Brothers. James and I regularly meet with the heads of studios such as NetherRealm or Rocksteady to discuss characters and stories that we find intriguing and that they are also interested in.
It’s important to note that a game labeled as DCU (DC Universe) isn’t just any game featuring DC Comics characters; it specifically refers to the universe developed by Gunn and Saffran, which includes the new Superman, Creature Commandos, and Batman from The Brave and the Bold. To add to the confusion, Matt Reeves’ The Batman stands in its own continuity, known as ‘The Batman Epic Crime Saga’, encompassing characters like The Penguin and an upcoming Clayface project.
Gunn, who is directing the latest Superman film, mentioned that the two co-chairs have a unique advantage as they get to see these projects at their initial stages and provide suggestions on potential paths for DC’s characters. In other words, during discussions about possible storylines, we might suggest certain directions based on our plans for specific characters, helping guide the studios in their decision-making process, as Gunn explained. Safran also shared that the first DCU game will be unveiled after several years have passed.
Indeed, it’s been a few years now, but we’ve been quite engaged with various upcoming projects. They’re genuinely intriguing,” Saffran remarked.
Lately, Warner Bros. Games has faced some tough times. The release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was both critically panned and failed financially, MultiVersus worsened their financial situation, and the development cost for Monolith’s Wonder Woman game is reportedly over $100 million with minimal progress so far. A recent report by Jason Schreier at Bloomberg also revealed that WB Games Montreal had proposed a John Constantine game but it wasn’t successful. Additionally, a Flash game was in development until the live-action film flopped, leading to its cancellation.
A positive aspect to consider is that Rocksteady Studios appears to be going back to developing single-player Batman games for their upcoming project, since WB Games is currently prioritizing its major franchise titles with their resources.
