Popular modder will help fix Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 as a new employee of Firaxis Games studio.
It’s common knowledge that the launch of Civilization 7 didn’t live up to expectations, to put it gently. Surprisingly, more people on Steam are choosing to play Civilization 6 instead. The 50% positive reviews and high price tag aren’t enticing buyers to try out the seventh version. However, it’s still a significant improvement compared to initial criticisms.
The programmer promptly began making corrections on the game, leading to several small adjustments and a substantial upgrade (and, unexpectedly, an early rollout of the next DLC expansion). Yet, it’s notable that even a month later, most lists of modifications emphasize considerable enhancements to the user interface – the aspect of Civilization 7 that received the most criticism.
The level of dissatisfaction among fans of the series regarding the UI is further demonstrated by the enthusiastic response to Firaxis hiring Sukrit “Sukritact” Tanticharoenkiat/Tana, a modder known for creating a well-received mod with enhancements to the Civ 7 interface (via Discord/BlueSky). Notably, the post about this topic on the series forum on Reddit has been the most popular thread of the past week, with an overwhelmingly positive tone in the comments.
“Let him cook”
Sukritact didn’t just enhance the UI for the seventh Civ; he actually started his modding journey with Civilization 5. Over time, he developed similar modifications and larger-scale projects in the sixth version. Given this background, it’s no surprise that fans are thrilled about his role as a technical artist.
Some players are concerned about how this will affect the modding scene, since—as Tan himself admitted earlier—modders have it easier because they “don’t have to work as part of the structure,” unlike official devs. They have to wait for approval and testing of their changes, while the modders can share their creation whenever they want. Not to mention, players are more lenient towards mistakes in fan modifications than those in the official updates.
Generally speaking, the majority of gamers are content with Tan’s appointment, viewing it as a significant milestone for the modder and an indicator of potential enhancements to the interface of Civilization VII and the overall game over the next few months.
A common opinion proposes that Firaxis Games should isolate Sukritact in a space and allow him to develop his work uninterrupted, publishing it without any revisions or adjustments. This approach is believed to result in the “optimal Civilization” game, which notably will be compatible not only with PCs (like mods), but also consoles.
