As a seasoned cinephile who’s had the pleasure of witnessing the evolution of cinema over several decades, I must say that the upcoming adaptation of Jay Parini’s memoir “Borges and Me” is a project that has piqued my interest significantly. The star-studded cast, the distinguished crew, and the captivating storyline promise a cinematic experience that is as enthralling as it is enlightening.
Actor Fionn Whitehead (“Dunkirk”) and Luis Gnecco (“Neruda”) are appearing in the movie adaptation of Jay Parini’s memoir “Borges and Me,” which is being filmed in Scotland. Marc Turtletaub (“Puzzle,” “Jules”) is helming the project, with Oren Moverman (“The Messenger,” “Love & Mercy”) penning the screenplay.
Completing the ensemble are BAFTA and Emmy laureate Alan Cumming, known from “The Traitors” and “The Good Wife”, as well as BAFTA and Emmy nominee Peter Mullan, recognized for his role in “Ozark”. Additionally, Emmy-nominated actress Harriet Sansom Harris is part of the team, best known for her work on “Hacks”.
The movie is a joint production among the U.K., Belgium, and the Netherlands, with funding provided by Big Beach. British producer Alex Polunin of Ossian International teams up with Michael B. Clark, Turtletaub, and Tim Foley from Big Beach. Additionally, Lemming Film’s Leontine Petit and Erik Glijnis, as well as Dries Phlypo from A Private View, serve as co-producers. Stephen Burt will oversee the project in an executive capacity.
In a memoir, Parini details his journey across the Scottish Highlands in 1970 alongside the acclaimed Argentine author, Jorge Luis Borges. Prior to this work, Parini’s historical novel “The Last Station” was transformed into a movie that received an Academy Award nomination.
In “Borges and Me,” I found myself behind the wheel of a Morris Minor, transporting the legendary, blind author Borges across Scotland. Reserved and scholarly, I — a 23-year-old aspiring writer — was at a loss to grasp the eccentricities of this wild, uncontainable man who was already 70 years old. As our journey took an unexpectedly surreal twist, our contrasting personalities seemed to grow ever more pronounced, mirroring the classic road trip narrative where disparate travelers eventually discover shared ground.
In a recent production on FX/BBC titled “Great Expectations,” Edward Whitehead appeared alongside Olivia Colman. Prior to this, he was featured in Christopher Nolan’s film “Dunkirk,” as well as “The Children Act” and Frances O’Connor’s “Emily.” For his performance in “Emily,” he received a nomination for the BIFA award in the best supporting category.
Actor Gnecco, of both Chilean and Italian descent, gained notoriety through his performances in “Neruda,” Chile’s first Oscar-nominated film for Best Foreign Film, as well as “No.” He also starred in the Academy Award-winning film “A Fantastic Woman.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing the exceptional talent that is Alan Cumming, a two-time Tony Award winner and six-time Emmy nominee, who also took home an Emmy for his captivating role as host of Peacock’s reality show “The Traitors.” You might recognize him from his spellbinding performances on the CBS series “The Good Wife” and its spinoff “The Good Fight.” His latest ventures include the Apple TV+ series “Schmigadoon!” and the engrossing documentary “My Old School.
BAFTA-winning actor and director Mullan received international acclaim for his role in “My Name Is Joe,” where he won the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival. A renowned Scottish actor and filmmaker, he appeared in “Trainspotting,” “War Horse,” the Harry Potter franchise, Netflix series “Ozark,” HBO’s “Westworld,” Netflix series “Cursed” and BBC’s “Mum.” He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for his work in Jane Campion’s “Top of the Lake” in 2013.
Harris received an Emmy nomination for her guest role on Netflix’s “Hacks” in the Season 2 episode titled “Retired.” Some of her notable film roles are in Paul Thomas Anderson’s films “Licorice Pizza” and “The Phantom Thread,” Christopher Nolan’s “Memento,” Barry Sonnenfeld’s “Addams Family Values,” and Turtletaub’s “Jules.
In 2023, Turtletaub’s latest movie titled “Jules,” featuring Ben Kingsley, was launched by Bleecker Street. This film bagged the Humanitas Prize for the best comedic screenplay. Earlier, his production “Puzzle,” starring Kelly Macdonald and Irrfan Khan, debuted at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Later, it was distributed by Sony Pictures Classics and clinched the audience award at the Deauville Film Festival.
Moverman, a renowned filmmaker, is widely recognized for his work on the Oscar-nominated movie “The Messenger,” along with other films such as “Rampart,” “Time Out of Mind,” “The Dinner,” “Love & Mercy,” “Married Life,” “I’m Not There,” and “Puzzle.
