Square Enix has unveiled the latest update for Final Fantasy XI, featuring a novel race transformation mechanism and exclusive events throughout May.
This announcement is tied to Square Enix’s 23rd anniversary celebration for Final Fantasy XI, during which they are running the “Return Home to Vana’diel Campaign”. If you were subscribed to PlayOnline or Final Fantasy XI service before, you can play the game free of charge until May 26. For more details about the update, click here. Additionally, Square Enix has unveiled a series of Magic: The Gathering cards themed around Final Fantasy, including “Shantotto’s Coercion”, “Vana’diel Adventures”, and “The Shadow Lord”.

I’m thrilled to share that Square Enix has just released the latest update for Final Fantasy XI Online, introducing the long-awaited race change system for the very first time! This update also brings fresh challenges in the Ambuscades and a host of unique May campaigns. To top it off, they’re celebrating the 23rd anniversary of Final Fantasy XI by offering a limited-time free return to Vana’diel Campaign. If you’ve ever subscribed to PlayOnline or the Final Fantasy XI service, you can revisit this classic game for free until May 26 at 1:00 a.m. Pacific!

- Character Race Change Service – The perfect way to switch things up and go on exciting new adventures throughout Vana’diel. This new paid service allows players to change their character’s race and appearance once, within 14 days from the date of purchase. - Return of Vana’Bout – Players can participate solo or with other adventurers from around the world to take on the large-scale “Vana’Bout” Records of Eminence objective and earn fabulous rewards.
- Updates to Besieged – Level 11 Beastmen are coming to Besieged. A new Morale Gauge based on the actions of the Five Serpent Generals and the overall battle situation is being added. Stand alongside the powered-up Five Serpent Generals to defend Al Zahbi.
- New Foes in Ambuscade – Orcs and flies return to Ambuscade.
- Login Campaign – The May 2025 Login Campaign runs through June 2 at 7:00 a.m. Pacific. Receive points and exchange them for in-game items. More information on the campaign items is available at: sqex.to/rTHps
In the 23rd episode of Freshly Picked Vana’diel broadcast, renowned producer Yoji Fujito unveiled three additional collaborative Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY cards.
