Square Enix is releasing a new board game based on Final Fantasy VII called Final Fantasy VII: Ascend the Shinra Tower. Pre-orders are now available on their Japanese online store, and the game will officially launch on November 6th for ¥4,400.
I’m so excited about this new board game! It’s going to play a lot like ‘Cat and the Tower’ by Arclight Games, which I already love. And the best part? Square Enix is working directly with Arclight to make this Final Fantasy VII version, so it should really capture the spirit of the game!
This cooperative board game challenges players to help Cloud Strife ascend the Shinra Tower. Players work together to build the tower, but it becomes increasingly unstable as it grows taller. Success depends on carefully adding wooden blocks to keep the tower from toppling over, requiring strong teamwork and strategic placement.
You win the game if Cloud makes it to the 8th floor before the tower falls. A full game usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes.

So, I’m really excited about this board game! The rulebook isn’t just in Japanese, which is awesome for international players – it’s also going to be available in English, French, and German. As for the game itself, it comes with a ton of stuff: 20 floor tiles to build the level, 54 wall pieces to create the maze, and 24 action cards to keep things interesting.
The set includes 24 wooden blocks featuring characters from the game, including the hero Cloud, his allies Tifa, Aerith, and Barret, members of the Avalanche group like Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge, and even the villain Sephiroth. You’ll also find blocks representing Shinra’s Rufus and Reno, as well as standard Shinra soldiers and mechs.
