During today’s PlayStation State of Play, the long-awaited remake of Final Fantasy Tactics was officially announced! In the package titled “Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles,” you’ll find both the original game and an upgraded version. Originally released in 1998 for the first PlayStation, this classic strategy RPG is now making its way to modern consoles this Fall. Additionally, the trailer unveiled that the remake will be available on September 30th.
Two versions of Final Fantasy Tactics are coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
In this remake, the original version of “Final Fantasy Tactics” blends the classic pixel-art graphics with the well-known War of the Lions translation. On the other hand, the upgraded version brings voice acting, significant story modifications and improvements, and a refreshed user interface to the table. For long-time enthusiasts of this specific game in the widely acclaimed Final Fantasy series, playing the enhanced version will offer a fresh perspective on the gameplay experience.
Although Final Fantasy Tactics is a cherished spinoff of the widely acclaimed RPG series, it hasn’t received a genuine sequel up until now. While Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was launched in 2008 for Game Boy Advance, that can only be regarded as an indirect continuation. The core Final Fantasy franchise has been gradually moving away from the traditional turn-based combats, which are inherent to tactics games.
In the latest upgrade of this remastered game, it doesn’t seem to offer significant improvements in graphics, but that’s not always a negative aspect. However, the vintage pixelated graphics appear to have been softened somewhat in the new images released. Considering the historical ties of the Tactics series with Nintendo, I can’t help but wonder if this version might be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 at some point in the future. Maybe we’ll hear more about it during a showcase this week. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is slated for release on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on September 30th, 2025.
