The ongoing discussion about the future direction of Final Fantasy series, specifically its battle system, persists, and recently, it was posed to the producer of Final Fantasy XVI, Naoki ‘Yoshi P’ Yoshida. He acknowledged that there is no straightforward or definite solution to this question.
In contrast to its predecessors, Final Fantasy XVI broke new ground by being an entirely real-time action game, abandoning the command menus that were a feature of the action-oriented Final Fantasy XV. During an interview at Anime Expo, Yoshida was inquired about whether the series might revert back to a turn-based system, considering the recent acclaim of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which drew inspiration from earlier Final Fantasy games and Persona.
Yoshida explained to Anime News Network that categorizing a game as turn-based or action-focused only considers the battle system. However, this doesn’t encompass the overall vision of the creators for the game they want to offer to players. For instance, factors like the graphical quality we aim to provide our players, or the storyline we wish to convey, influence how we structure the game’s systems. This involves the battle system, game design, and player experience. It’s not a straightforward choice whether it will be entirely turn-based or heavily action-oriented.
In essence, the mainline numbered Final Fantasy games often feature distinct settings, characters, and gameplay mechanics, with various teams working on each title. Producer Yoshida particularly highlights the involvement of different groups. He is not guaranteed to work on Final Fantasy 17, so they aim to avoid restricting or confining the potential director or developers of future games like 17 or even 18, allowing them creative freedom rather than setting a fixed path for them.
Last month, Final Fantasy 16 became available on Xbox Series X|S, having first been launched on PS5 in 2023 and then made accessible via Steam the previous year. This marks a change in Square Enix’s approach as they aim to move away from console exclusives. In September, Final Fantasy Tactics: Ivalice Chronicles will be released across various platforms.
