The latest update for “Final Fantasy XIV” is now available! Last time with patch 7.1, I mentioned that it was generally good but lacked significant content for those not into raiding. Since then, my observations and reader feedback have echoed the same sentiment. This has been an exciting period for raiders in “Final Fantasy XIV,” but casual players might find the content limited outside of the Main Scenario Quests (MSQ) and Alliance Raid offerings.
As a gamer, I must admit, even after two and a half weeks since Patch 7.2 dropped, it seems like there hasn’t been much of a gameplay expansion yet. The update introduced some Main Story Quest (MSQ), a new dungeon, a fresh Trial (including an Extreme version), a new tier for the Normal Raid series, and a Savage version of those same raid battles. Not to mention, there were a few new glamour options added to the Treasure Dungeon loot pool too. Naturally!
If we just focus on the improvements made so far with this update, it would be tempting to grumble about the same concerns I’ve been expressing for quite some time – there still isn’t enough content for players who don’t raid. However, I’m not so self-centered to believe that raids are the only important aspect of Final Fantasy XIV, or that most players even participate in them. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait much longer for the other significant additions promised with this patch, and now that the AAC Cruiserweight (Savage) tier has settled down – it’s one of the best Savage Raids in nearly a decade – everyone is eagerly anticipating the arrival of Cosmic Explorations and Shade’s Triangle, which are expected to drop between patches 7.2 and 7.3.
As I refine my ideas about the raid tier in Shade’s Triangle, I find myself incredibly enthusiastic about the blend of raid design from Chaotic Cloud of Darkness with the latest Savage (and even Normal) tiers. Eureka and Bozja are undeniably two of Final Fantasy XIV’s finest content offerings, and the emerging approach to fight design in large-scale Exploration Zones is truly exhilarating. I sense that many players, whether they participate in Savage Raids or not, eagerly anticipate this update, as it seems poised to be the crowning jewel of Dawntrail.
With the imminent Cosmic Exploration providing a consistent draw for avid crafters, and the most immersive Main Scenario of Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail now underway, many players are noticing a shift in their experience. As anticipated, once we reach patch 7.25, it seems we’re approaching a significant milestone for this expansion as a whole. Excitingly, there are still Variant and Criterion dungeons to be introduced, a new Deep Dungeon, Beastmaster, and additional content in the coming months and years; although the wait has been prolonged, it appears that the long-promised changes outside of the graphical update and the inclusion of a second dye channel for equipment are finally materializing.
Players who have been eagerly anticipating new content in Final Fantasy XIV no longer need to worry about when the next update will arrive. With Dawntrail on the horizon, there’s now a compelling reason for players who haven’t been active raiders to renew their subscriptions. Although the journey has had its ups and downs, it seems that Dawntrail is poised to establish itself as one of the finest expansions in Final Fantasy XIV in the near future.
