Final Fantasy 14 is rewarding Japanese players with free cosmetics for paying their taxes

Most people don’t get a virtual dog and powerful items after doing their taxes, but players of the game Final Fantasy 14 in Japan can now earn exactly those rewards.

You can receive benefits through Japan’s “hometown tax” system, called “furusato nozei.” It allows you to redirect some of your income tax – normally paid to the national government – to a local city or town of your choice.

As a thank you, the city sends a present. This year, Shibuya Ward in Tokyo chose to give players in-game items for the online game made by Square Enix.

Why the Megashiba mount costs $360 in tax money

So, there are six different rewards you can snag, and which one you get depends on how much you donate. The Collegiate Attire – both the slacks and the skirt versions – and the Magitek attire all cost 7,000 yen. If you want the Megashiba mount, that’ll run you 9,000 yen – it’s a nod to the famous Hachiko statue near Shibuya Station, which is pretty cool!

You can buy four dance emotes for 11,000 yen. The biggest reward, five Phials of Fantasia which allow you to completely change how your character looks – including their appearance, race, and gender – costs 17,000 yen.

If you win all six prizes, you’ll be donating around $360 (58,000 yen). While the cosmetics included are worth about $88 if purchased directly from the Final Fantasy 14 online store, the main benefit isn’t about winning something valuable. This money would have gone to taxes anyway, making a Megashiba plushie a more unique and fun reward than typical donation gifts like rice or beef.

There’s a downside to this promotion: it’s tied to a Japanese tax system. If you don’t file taxes in Japan, getting the Megashiba will cost extra. This is similar to other limited-time offers – like past KFC collaborations – that were only available in Japan. Players experienced the same disappointment with the game’s recent real-world meal promotion and its exclusive “Eat Chicken” emote.
