The highly anticipated film “Final Destination: Bloodlines” is nearly here, and while fans are eagerly looking forward to this fresh take on the franchise, there’s one aspect they might not find in the upcoming movie – or any future ones. The plot of “Bloodlines” takes a new twist for the series, as it revolves around Death pursuing a family that supposedly shouldn’t have come into existence.
In a recent conversation, Russ Milheim from TopMob had the chance to chat with veteran franchise producer Craig Perry. During their discussion, Perry shared plenty of insights about the upcoming addition to the popular Warner Bros. horror series, and even hinted at a creative path the series may avoid in the future.
Don’t Expect an Embodiment of Death in the Final Destination Franchise
“I Don’t Think We’ll Ever Go to That Place…”
- TopMob: “One of the joys of horror franchises is how they can just constantly evolve going forward… [In that vein], I’ve always wondered, what would the physical embodiment of death actually look like? Is that something you’ve ever considered actually exploring, kind of like a heavier sci-fi way in these films, and like, what if we gave them somebody to interact with?”
Craig Perry: Throughout the entire movie, there was a significant discussion about Death’s appearance in the room, focusing on our personal preferences as viewers. James Wong and Glenn Morgan were firm on this point, and I concur with them, suggesting that we should not witness anything in that regard. This approach allows each viewer to contribute their own beliefs about death to the narrative.
The film enables us to journey across various countries, delving into diverse cultures, and carrying with us our unique perceptions of death. This perspective is what you bring to the cinema, and it influences your viewing experience. Consequently, even though we don’t explicitly depict death in the movie, you visualize it in your mind, making the experience personal and relevant to your location. I believe that by not showing death directly, we maintain a level of universality and inclusivity, ensuring that everyone can engage with the film.
Why Bloodlines Was the Best Next Move for the Franchise
This New Angle “Really Invigorated the Creative Process.”
- TopMob: “The film is titled Bloodlines. Yes, it’s all about death, basically hunting down a family. When it came to that idea, what was it that really spoke to you about that idea, and you know, just how that would evolve the franchise, and how it might paint the whole franchise in a new light for long-term fans.”
Craig Perry noted that Jon Watts initially conceived the idea. Being an ardent fan of ‘Final Destination’, we were fortunate to have him approach us. He expressed, “I have an idea,” and we responded enthusiastically. One reason his concept was so engaging, Perry suggested, was because it focused on a family. This instantly triggers emotional involvement with this group of characters as there’s a sense of familiarity or camaraderie present.
Families, regardless of their qualities, serve as a rich source for both emotional depth and understanding. They may be complex, chaotic, or troubled, yet they offer ample opportunities for drama and fostering empathy. It’s easy to become attached to this family right away. Moreover, families provide a straightforward means of tracing lineage – akin to biblical genealogy – showing who came from whom.
However, Jon’s initial concept involved a time jump of 50 years, tracing the bloodline through a challenging journey leading to Stefani, our female protagonist, portrayed by Kaitlyn Santa Juana. These two aspects maintained the essence of the franchise while offering a new entry point that felt innovative and rejuvenated the creative dynamics.
Will the Wait for Final Destination 7 Be Just as Long as 6?
“Don’t Count Your Chickens.”
- TopMob: “Now, fans had to wait 14 years for this movie. Number seven, is that wait gonna be just as cruel? Have there been conversations already about what might be next?”
Craig Perry expressed it like this: In essence, let me tell you, don’t assume success before it happens. However, we were thrilled to be given another chance to create a movie. If the audience reacts as I anticipate and as I truly hope, considering all the effort we put into crafting this film for them, then perhaps there will be more opportunities. But for now, we’re eagerly awaiting a large number of people to watch ‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’ in IMAX.
