Final Destination: Bloodlines Finally Confirms Tony Todd’s Real Purpose in the Franchise 25 Years Later

Since the release of ‘Final Destination 5’ in 2011, ‘Final Destination Bloodlines‘ is the first movie in the series to grace theaters. The new film had a challenging task: it needed to resemble its predecessors but also bring something new to the table so fans wouldn’t feel like they were watching a rehash. To achieve this balance, ‘Bloodlines’ blended familiar aspects from the original movies with a twist on the traditional ‘Final Destination’ formula.

Among the noteworthy choices made for the series “Bloodlines”, incorporating Tony Todd proved to be particularly beneficial. Known as a horror icon, Todd is recognized for portraying Candyman and making appearances in nearly every film within the “Final Destination” series. Regrettably, Todd passed away in 2024, which means that “Bloodlines” was one of his final projects before his unfortunate demise. The inclusion of Tony Todd significantly bolsters the importance of “Bloodlines” within the overall franchise.

Tony Todd’s William Bludworth is a Legendary Part of Final Destination

Bludworth Appears in Every Movie Except One

In five out of six existing “Final Destination” films, William Bludworth serves as a secondary character. He’s featured on-screen in all movies except for “Final Destination 3” (2006). Although Tony Todd doesn’t physically appear in the third installment, his voice does. In “Final Destination 3”, the main character Wendy Christensen goes to a theme park with her boyfriend and friends. During their ride on the Devil’s Flight roller coaster, tragedy strikes and everyone on board is killed. Interestingly, Todd provides the voice for an animatronic devil within the theme park, so although Bludworth doesn’t appear in the film, Todd’s influence can still be felt.

William Bludworth primarily works as both a coroner and mortician, running the Bludworth Funeral Homes. Frequently, due to his profession as a coroner, he interacts with the main characters in each movie. Some of these characters find Bludworth peculiar or intriguing, given his extensive knowledge about death. Because of Bludworth’s profound understanding of Death, some viewers have speculated that William Bludworth is not just a character but the embodiment of Death itself. This assumption stems from Bludworth’s habit of delivering ominous warnings about meddling with Death. Furthermore, his consistent appearance whenever catastrophe strikes has led many to believe he might be Death, pursuing those who have evaded him.

“By exiting the plane earlier, you’ve already taken that action. Your friend’s departure suggests a new twist in death’s scheme for everyone involved. Now it’s up to you to predict when and how this event may recur. Go with your gut, Alex. If you believe you can evade it, but keep in mind the danger of deceiving fate or disregarding the rules… such actions might provoke a wrath so intense, it would scare even Death himself. And trust me, you don’t want to mess with that.

– William Bludworth warns Alex about Death in Final Destination (2000)

This theory suggests that Bludworth, a character known for speaking about Death’s grand plan and disliking disrespect, might be subtly hinting at having a personal stake in the fatal accidents. If viewers interpret his words this way, it seems like he’s expressing more of “I don’t want to be tricked” rather than “Death doesn’t want to be tricked.” However, this was part of the character’s design – Bludworth is meant to be an enigmatic, perplexing, and intimidating figure who appears to know too much about things that shouldn’t be known.

In each film where he appears, even though not strictly part of the main narrative, Bludworth holds significant importance. He is well-versed in the intricacies of Death’s modus operandi, understanding why certain individuals are targeted and the sequence of their impending deaths. He has a knack for detecting when Death is imminent. Often, he provides cryptic counsel to those pursued by Death, granting them a brief reprieve from Death’s grasp. Furthermore, it is established that Bludworth knows of only two methods to intentionally evade Death.

To evade Death, you must take another’s life and live out their remaining years. This act will cause your lifespan to extend. Your alternative is to accept death. Once pronounced clinically dead, you can be revived. Since you’ve temporarily left this world, Death’s pursuit will cease.

Bloodlines Finally Unravels the Mystery Behind Bludworth

The Truth Seems So Obvious, But Fans Will Never See It Coming

In the end, the lead character in Final Destination Bloodlines, Stefani, resorts to her grandmother Iris’ book on Death to find an individual who could potentially save her family from impending doom. Iris, Stefani’s grandmother, had been eluding Death for several decades before her passing (which occurred in front of Stefani). Prior to Iris’ demise, she bequeathed the book on Death to Stefani. This book contains newspaper clippings about other instances where Death was tricked and returned for the survivors, as well as valuable insights on recognizing when Death is imminent. The book hints that a person known as “JB” once discovered someone who escaped Death’s grasp.

Stefani, joined by her brother, cousins, and mother, locate JB in a hospital morgue, who is none other than William Bludworth. Bludworth shares with them two methods he’s found to evade Death, while he also discusses his longstanding relationship with Iris. Bludworth has known Iris for many years. He first encountered her when he was just a child.

The story Bloodlines opens with a chilling foreboding as Iris and her partner find themselves at the recently built Skyview Restaurant Tower in the late 1960s. Completed ahead of time, hinting at potential shortcuts during construction, this tower unfortunately proves to be a fatal mistake for Iris. The structure boasts a glass dance floor that tragically shatters, leading numerous people to fall to their deaths. As more structural problems ensue, one incident triggers another, eventually causing the entire tower to crumble. The death toll could range from dozens to hundreds.

In this scenario, it’s just Iris and a young lad left alive. The boy was accompanying his singer mother at work. He was biding time until she finished her shift. Tragically, the mother perished in an explosion, but she managed to shield the child by hiding him inside a storage cabinet. Iris, who found the boy, tried to escort him out of the tower, yet they both unfortunately met their end from the fall. Heartbreakingly, Iris breathed her last mere seconds prior to the boy. Following a premonition, Iris was able to alert everyone about the fissures in the dance floor. As a result, the tower was vacated, and all those who were supposed to perish managed to live thanks to Iris’s timely warning.

Following that fateful day, Death embarked on a multi-decade pursuit of anyone who survived the catastrophe at the Skyview Restaurant Tower. Some of these individuals went on to create families that should not have been, prompting Death to target their descendants too. Iris, one such survivor, had two children and grandchildren, making her family a central theme in “Bloodlines“. This tale demonstrates the lengths Death will go to rectify fate’s manipulations. However, Death operates methodically, ensuring that it claims every person who should have perished in the sequence they would have in the original tragedy’s timeline. Given Iris was second-to-last to die, she managed to postpone Death for several decades.

William Bludworth was the child whom Iris protected, and he was the last individual to perish in her prophetic vision. Since Death cannot claim Bludworth until Iris and all her descendants have passed away, he has been immune to Death’s grasp since Iris saved his life and the lives of many others. Over time, they remained close, with Bludworth even assisting Iris in constructing her sanctuary, where she secluded herself from the world to delay Death as long as possible. As long as Iris was alive, her family would be safeguarded, and so would Bludworth.

Bludworth developed expertise in all matters related to death, eventually becoming a coroner and mortician. This extensive knowledge of Death stemmed from the fact that he himself managed to elude it initially.

In his chat with Stefani and her kin, he admits to being ill, akin to Iris. Aware of his limited remaining time, he chooses to savor it and encourages them to do the same. It can be inferred that Bludworth survived the movie’s events, for Death wouldn’t claim him until every member of Iris’ lineage had perished. Since Stefani and Charlie didn’t meet their end until the closing moments of the film, it’s safe to assume Bludworth was still breathing at that point. However, it’s unfortunate that moviegoers are unlikely to encounter Bludworth again, as he passed away before the film’s release.
