FilmNation Entertainment has brought on board Andy Kim, formerly of Participant Media’s top management, to take up the role of Chief Operating Officer.
In his latest role, Kim will manage all operational activities, strategic planning, business expansion, and financial aspects at an autonomous entertainment firm. He’s set to start as FilmNation continues to ride a crest of both critical and commercial triumphs, such as supporting Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, “Anora,” and Edward Berger’s BAFTA Best Film recipient, “Conclave.” Both films are vying for the Academy Award for best picture.
Kim expressed her excitement about becoming part of the FilmNation Entertainment team and taking charge of operations, as well as contributing to the creation of impactful stories that resonate globally. The dynamic and constantly changing nature of FilmNation caught Kim’s attention, and she is eager to work alongside a variety of talented artists from various entertainment fields.
Milan Popelka, formerly the COO of FilmNation, has recently departed from the company to take up a partnership role at LuckyChap, the production house known for producing films like “Barbie” and “Saltburn,” which is co-founded by actress Margot Robbie.
Previously, Kim worked as the Chief Financial Officer at Participant Media, managing financial and operational duties. Before that, he was with The Weinstein Company, where he served as CFO, handling financial operations and identifying strategic growth opportunities in both film and television. Kim is a member of the Executive Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, an advisor to Goldhouse, a non-profit organization serving the Asian Pacific community, a member of the Audit Committee for Film Independent’s Board, and an Adjunct Faculty Member at New York University’s Stern School of Business. Kim earned his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and holds an MBA from the Stern School of Business at NYU.
According to Glen Basner, CEO of FilmNation Entertainment, “Andy’s extensive and versatile background, coupled with his hands-on approach, will be extremely beneficial as we move forward in expanding and developing new ideas.” He added that Andy’s established reputation and influence within the industry will assist us in raising our business to higher levels and refining our creative aspirations.
FilmNation functions as a production company, providing financing and distribution services for films, television shows, podcasts, and stage productions. They have contributed to successful projects such as “The Big Sick,” “Arrival,” HBO’s “I Know This Much is True,” and the Tony-winning “Stereophonic.” FilmNation is also the base of Infrared, a fresh film production label that focuses on films with the possibility of becoming franchises. The debut project of Infrared, titled “Novocaine” featuring Jack Quaid, will premiere in March.
