Filmax Rolls Out Cesc Gay’s ‘My Friend Eva,’ Closing Italy, Germany (EXCLUSIVE)

Filmax, a small production studio based in Barcelona, has made additional pre-sales available for “My Friend Eva,” a movie directed by Cesc Gay, who is also known for “Truman.” The film’s rights have been sold in various territories before its Cannes screening, including Italy (Teodora Films) and Germany and Austria (Neue Visionen).

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that my favorite flick found its way to various international screens post the Berlin European Film Market. It was bought by Lev Cinemas in Israel, Cinobo in Greece, and Beta Films in Bulgaria. Additionally, Cinemania snapped up the film rights for the former Yugoslavia region.

The movie revolves around Eva (Nora Navas, known for “Pain and Glory” and “The Distinguished Citizen”), a woman married with a passion for life who embarks on a journey to rediscover her longing for romance. Her world undergoes a significant change following an unexpected meeting in Rome. This encounter reignites the sensation of falling in love within her.

Juan Diego Botto (“The Suicide Squad”) and Rodrigo de la Serna (“Money Heist”) co-star.

Torsten Frehse, CEO of Neue Visionen, expressed his enthusiasm for Cesc Gay’s films and stated that they believe the main character in ‘My Friend Eva’, who is an intriguing, relatable middle-aged woman, has the potential to strike a chord with a broad spectrum of viewers.

The film titled ‘My Friend Eva’ was created by Gay and Edu Sola, who recently won a Goya Award for Best Screenplay this year with their work on ‘A House on Fire.’ This production is another addition to the long-standing collaborative efforts between Gay and Imposible Films, his near-career-long partner in filmmaking.

I’m thrilled to share that the much-anticipated release of this film is set for September in Spain. Until then, we’ll be reveling in its global successes and the latest updates about another movie by Cesc, titled ‘The People Upstairs.’ In fact, a high-profile American remake of it has just been announced!” – Your Movie Reviewer

Gay mentioned that Eva is his first main female character. He’s been eager for a while to create a strong female lead, but never had before… until now! And he’s thrilled about it because writing and directing this film has been incredibly engaging, and it goes without saying that everyone involved is pleased with the outcome.

10 features have been directed by Marta Esteban’s Barcelona-based studio Imposible Films, under the leadership of writer-director Gay since his debut film “Hotel Room” in 1998. Known for his ironic perspective on societal pressures and human contradictions, as well as his portrayal of human flaws, Gay is one of a select few Spanish directors whose films have garnered success in cinema theaters outside Spain, such as “Truman” which was screened in Brazil.

He also directed TV series “Félix,” selected for main competition at Canneseries.
