Film Factory Secures Global Rights to Suspense Thriller ‘The Cavern Crimes’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for delving into the intricacies of filmmaking, I find myself captivated by the premise of “The Cavern Crimes.” The unique blend of crime, mystery, and philosophical underpinnings set against the backdrop of the Atapuerca archaeological site is an irresistible combination.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve recently learned about my own involvement in the distribution journey of director Manuel Rios San Martín’s gripping film, “The Cavern Crimes.” Film Factory Entertainment, a dynamic Spanish sales company, has seized the rights to this masterpiece and is now showcasing it to potential buyers at this year’s American Film Market.

Alfa Pictures will lead a Spanish domestic theatrical release for spring 2025.

The mystery novel unfolds in Burgos, close to the Atapuerca archaeological site, famous for the Gran Dolina cave where traces of Western Europe’s earliest known human habitation were found. The story revolves around an investigation into the gruesome ritual killing of a young girl, which triggers a collective hysteria in a neighboring small town that had endured a similar tragedy six years prior.

Vincente Canales from Film Factory shared with EbMaster that ‘The Cavern Crimes’ is a gripping suspense thriller combining elements of crime and mystery, uniquely set against the historical backdrop of the Atapuerca paleontological site, where the oldest human remains outside Africa are found. This remarkable location has never been featured in film before. The film’s unique history offers significant international appeal, making it a production that can resonate universally.

San Martín pointed out that “Violence, being a product of natural evolution, played a significant role in shaping our existence, even though we now find it shameful and struggle to deal with it. However, violence is deeply ingrained within us genetically.

Instead of merely crafting an intense suspenseful film, I yearned for something more profound. I desired it to delve into philosophy. Atapuerca isn’t just intriguing terrain; it also raises thought-provoking questions about what truly defines us as human – is it violence or empathy? In the excavation process, we discovered instances of cannibalism along with hominids who aided sick individuals hundreds of thousands of years ago, the director explains.

Created by La Charito Films, one of the highlighted firms during the Spanish Screenings Producers Showcase at the AFM, “The Cavern Crimes” is now undergoing post-production following filming from August to October of the current year.
