As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the highly-anticipated documentary “Steal This Story, Please!” by Carl Deal and Tia Lessin, centered around renowned journalist and Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman, will kick off the third installment of DC/Dox on June 12. Don’t miss this captivating tale unfold before your eyes!
In the movie titled “Deal and Lessin,” the producers of “Fahrenheit 9/11” delve into Goodman’s personal journey while also showcasing the significant news events she has reported on. This film, premiering at DC/Dox for the first time globally, underscores the pivotal impact of journalism in shaping our perception of reality, particularly at a time when independent journalism faces challenges and threats.
Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman’s movie, titled ‘The Alabama Solution,’ which focuses on incarcerated men uncovering a conspiracy within one of America’s most lethal prison systems, is set to be the main feature at the DC/Dox Center. This documentary originally debuted earlier in the year at the Sundance Film Festival on HBO.”
Or, more concisely:
“The film ‘The Alabama Solution,’ directed by Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman, about incarcerated men exposing a cover-up in a dangerous U.S. prison system, will be the centerpiece at the DC/Dox Center. It first premiered on HBO at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.
1) “Chase Joynt’s ‘State of Firsts’, featuring Sarah McBride’s groundbreaking bid to become the first transgender member of Congress, is set as the main film for the festival. Meanwhile, Dan Krauss’ ‘Bodyguard of Lies’ will conclude the festival. Produced by Alex Gibney, ‘Bodyguard of Lies’ uncovers the intricate web of deceit perpetuated by the U.S. government during its 20-year war in Afghanistan. This Paramount+ documentary will also be screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in June.
Beginning our third year, DC/Dox’s purpose seems more significant than ever according to co-founder and festival director Sky Sitney. ‘Art has the ability to provide an escape, but it also holds the power to make us face what’s worth fighting for.’ The themes of our Signature Screenings reflect this ethos – they are thought-provoking, motivational, and serve as a reminder of the importance of the issues we grapple with today in our world.
Jamied Shor, co-founder of DC/Dox, states, “Amidst Washington’s transformation, we at DC/Dox are more dedicated than ever before to share significant stories with our nation, our local area, and these four films all convey messages that resonate with the times we currently live in.
Established in 2022, DC/Dox serves as a platform for uniting cutting-edge ideas, powerful narratives, and current events within Washington D.C.’s film community. The previous year showcased more than 90 films from 17 different countries, including the local premieres of contenders for the Academy Award such as “Black Box Diaries,” “Porcelain War,” “Soundtrack to a Coup D’Etat,” and “Sugarcane.” The 2024 lineup included this year’s Academy Award-winning short documentary, “The Only Girl In the Orchestra.
This year marks the third time that DC/Dox will be held in Washington, D.C., from June 12th to the 15th. The complete list of participants will be unveiled in May.
