FFXIV devs pause in-game housing demolition amid Hurricane Helene

As a gamer who has weathered countless digital storms and real-life hurricanes alike, I can’t help but be moved by Square Enix’s compassionate response to Hurricane Helene. In a world where virtual plots of land are often more prized than physical ones, it’s heartening to see a company prioritize its players over profit during such challenging times.

Developers of Final Fantasy XIV have temporarily halted the destruction of homes on specific game servers following Hurricane Helene’s impact in North America, giving players some breathing room during these challenging times.

In late September 2024, Hurricane Helene struck the Southeastern U.S., resulting in a tragic event with heavy loss of life and property damage. Consequently, developers of Final Fantasy XIV have decided to temporarily halt home demolitions on their North American game servers.

In a recent blog post, the FFXIV team expressed their sympathies to those impacted by Hurricane Helene towards the end of last month across North America.

Because of various issues and damages, we’ve chosen to halt the temporary automated destruction of housing estates.

The halt on the self-destruct mechanism has been active since October 2, 2024, at 1:08 a.m., Pacific Daylight Time. The servers affected by this are Primal, Dynamis, Crystal, and the Aether Data Center.

No worries, as soon as the auto-demolish feature gets reactivated on these servers, it’ll pick up right where we left off, taking into account the time that elapsed during the suspension. This means if you weren’t in your base for a specific duration before the game paused, your timer will still be set to the same amount of time when it comes back online.

Additionally, it’s noted that if a player’s property is set for demolition, they have the option to halt the process just by occupying their house or structure on the designated land.

The resumption of housing demolition doesn’t have a specific date just yet. Developers are keeping an eye on things over the next few days and will notify us as soon as they make a decision.

We deeply wish for a speedy recovery for everyone involved, so they can return to Final Fantasy XIV as soon as possible.

In Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV), players can purchase a house for themselves as long as they have sufficient Gil. However, if they wish to maintain ownership of the house, they must visit it at least once every 45 days.

If the specified time elapses, the house will be torn down autonomously, giving other players a chance to seize that territory since real estate in Eorzea is highly sought after.
