Felix Baumgartner dies in paragliding accident 13 years after jumping from space

The renowned Austrian adventurer Felix Baumgartner, famously recognized for his 2012 skydive from space, tragically passed away following a paragliding mishap in Italy at the age of 56.

On July 17th, an incident took place close to Porto Sant’Elpidio along the Adriatic coast of Italy. As per reports, Baumgartner was piloting a motorized paraglider at the time. Unfortunately, he seemed to have lost control over the aircraft, causing it to collide with the swimming pool area of a nearby hotel resort.

According to officials, Baumgartner tragically passed away upon impact, while a hotel employee who was involved in the accident sustained injuries but is anticipated to make a full recovery.

Baumgartner is remembered for his record-breaking space jump

2012 saw Austrian skydiver Baumgartner achieve worldwide recognition when he leaped from the stratosphere during the Red Bull Stratos mission. He soared up to approximately 128,100 feet in a balloon filled with helium before making his descent back to Earth, reaching speeds surpassing 800 miles an hour.

Apart from his famous Stratos jump, Baumgartner was also an experienced BASE jumper and skydiver, renowned for performing daring stunts from iconic structures such as the Petronas Towers and the statue of Christ the Redeemer.

The man was also a veteran paraglider and often shared his flights in videos posted to Instagram.

In October 2022, Red Bull unveiled a documentary titled Space Jump, which focuses on the life of Baumgartner and his historic freefall from a helium balloon in space.

The authorities are still working to determine what caused the plane crash, and they haven’t specified the precise health problem that resulted in the pilot losing control.
