The movie is derived from the 1992 novel “The Prom Queen” by R.L. Stine. Netflix has already distributed a set of three “Fear Street” films in 2021, directed by Leigh Janiak: “Fear Street Part One: 1994”, “Fear Street Part Two: 1978”, and “Fear Street Part Three: 1666”.
In “Fear Street: Prom Queen,” an ’80s school dance transforms into a grisly scene. As stated in the synopsis, “Prom season at Shadyside High is underway and the pack of popular girls are engaging in their usual sweet and ruthless maneuvers to secure the crown. However, when an audacious newcomer challenges them, and the other girls begin mysteriously vanishing, the class of ’88 finds themselves in for a most terrifying prom night.
Matt Palmer, known as Calibre, helmed the director’s chair for “Fear Street: Prom Queen,” a project he jointly penned with Donald Mcleary. The ensemble features India Fowler from “The Nevers,” Suzanna Son of “Red Rocket,” Fina Strazza from “Above the Shadows,” Ariana Greenblatt who has appeared in “Barbie,” Chris Klein from “Sweet Magnolias,” David Iacono of “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” Ella Rubin from “The Idea of You,” Lili Taylor of “Outer Range,” and Katherine Waterston, a familiar face from “Perry Mason.
The production team comprises of Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and Kori Adelson (through Chernin Entertainment), who function as the producers. Meanwhile, Yvonne Bernard, Jane Stine, and Joan Waricha serve as the executive producers.
EbMaster placed the “Fear Street” trilogy on its list of top horror movies for 2021, noting that there is an abundance of bloodshed and sorrow in these films which can sometimes overshadow the spooky enjoyment, as it’s important to mourn the fictional deceased teenagers appropriately.
“Fear Street: Prom Queen” premieres on Netflix May 23. Watch the official trailer below.
