FBI Seizes Prominent Nintendo Switch Piracy Site

The FBI has taken over one of the most well-known websites used for Nintendo Switch piracy. Previously, Nsw2u, a platform hosting multiple Nintendo Switch ROMs, now directs users to a notice indicating that the site has been shut down.

Based on Kotaku’s report, it was revealed that Nsw2u was confiscated during a joint law enforcement operation with participation from the Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIOD), a Dutch agency focusing on financial crimes. The warrant for this seizure originated from a U.S. District Court located in Georgia.

It’s clear that Nintendo has been aggressive in its fight against piracy, particularly following the release of the Switch 2 last month. Unfortunate users have discovered this firsthand by inserting an MIG Switch cartridge into their Switch 2 consoles, resulting in a permanent ban from online access. The MIG Switch cartridge is capable of storing ROMs from both legal and illegitimate sources, but Nintendo appears to have no tolerance for either. Once a Switch 2 console has been flagged for using an MIG Switch, the ban cannot be lifted as the cartridge breaches Nintendo’s terms of use.

Last year, Nintendo took extraordinary measures to find a suspected pirate, presumably serving as a deterrent for others who might infringe on copyrights. This person was charged for selling devices that allowed unauthorized modifications and distributing Switch consoles loaded with illegal games.

In 2020, notorious Switch pirate Gary Bowser was apprehended and received a 40-month prison sentence. Although he managed to get out early due to good conduct, Bowser is yet to fulfill Nintendo’s substantial financial penalties against him. Furthermore, Bowser has stated that his case served as a warning to discourage other Switch pirates from engaging in further unlawful activities.
